The Dolphins organization has been very elusive regarding their QB situation. So everyone’s opinion outside of the organization is a shot in the dark.

The one aspect of the Dolphins QB position that’s a near lock: Tannehill’s days are numbered in Miami.
Aren’t they?!
Miami can’t say in no uncertain terms that ‘Tannehill’s outta here’ because that wouldn’t put them in the best bargaining position for a trade… However unlikely that trade is. Any reporter that has brought up Tannehill has received the pre-pressed line, ‘we are still evaluating everything’.
But, a full rebuild begins will Ryan Tannehill getting ejected from South Florida.
No?
Well, assuming for the sake of argument (that’s what we do around here at Phinnews) Tannehill will be cut… or possibly traded. This means Miami will have to poke around the Free Agency bin, trade, draft, or a combination of all three for this year’s QB. But if the Phins go to the FA and still draft a QB, they can’t break the bank on a placeholder that’s not the future of this organization.
Who will be the Dolphins starting QB in 2019?
Most of the various bookie software programs bet that Miami will draft a QB in the upcoming draft.
Phinsnews recently wrote about using our 1st Round Pick on a QB. However, all the 1st Round QB prospects have flaws and Miami will probably have to trade up to get one… so there’s strong risk attached to their aquisition.
Miami might wait until 2020 to use a blue chip on a Quarterback.
Also, Coach Flores has mentioned he wants to build this team up through the trenches first. So is the ‘subliminal message’ that we should not expect Miami to use the 13th overall pick in the draft on a QB?
Miami could very well embrace their mulligan and select an offensive or defensive linemen… or even better, trade down and accumulate picks. This team has a lot of holes to fill. If that is the route that Miami goes, they still can draft a QB in the middle to later rounds. There’s NO EXCUSE for Miami not to select one QB during the 7 rounds of the upcoming draft.
Free Agency Options:
Nick Foles is the biggest names out there, but he will demand a lot of money and want a team capable of contending. Also, Foles is a system QB who bombed with the Rams recently. Phins & Foles won’t happen… At least, we can pray.
Teddy Bridgewater is a young talent, so he does have that in his favor. However, since his terrible knee injury in 2016, he has seen little action. If his asking price is reasonable, a roll the dice on Bridgewater could make sense. Bridgewater could be a placeholder and eventual backup if he doesn’t regain the flash he showed before his injury. Even if Miami drafts a QB, worst case this plays out similarly as Tyrod Talyor did in Cleveland.
The rest of the pickings are very slim: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tyrod Taylor, Brock Osweiler, and Josh McCown. For starters, I have seen enough of Osweiler and think it’s a safe bet he isn’t coming back. I’m not a fan of McCown, Taylor, Fitzpatrick. They are ‘serviceable’ for a season, but nothing more than that.
Free Agent options offer little and aren’t in any of my ‘best-case scenarios’.
Rumors of the Dolphins interest in Jacoby Brissett is gaining some steam…
… this is one of the better scenarios—in theory. Brissett is a very intriguing player. Will that intrigue develope and would make him the right signal caller? When you watch Brissett’s tape… it has some pop. Does it have enough juice though?
The one thing I like about Brissett is this staff knows him— well. If they screw up his evaluation, it will give a strong and early sign that Grier and Co. are just a bunch of pretenders. Whether the trade for him or not, this is one move they should nail with authority.
Brissett will cost Miami at least a 3rd Round Pick to get him and money come 2020 as he’s on the last year of his rookie contract. The Colts need a reason to have an excellent backup pried from their fingers. General manager Chris Ballard said he’d ‘have to be bowled over by an offer to trade Brissett’. Ballard knows he can sit on Brissett and see him walk next season, and if he plays his cards right, collect a late 3rd in a compensatory pick.
Brissett will cost quality picks and a good contract. So he’ll have high expectations and will need to be a long-term starter for the pric.
But, if they make the trade and he rises to the occasion, think how sweet that would be. Not only would we have found a starter cheap, but a former Pat would haunt New England for years to come!
This scenario is a bit too dreamy for reality. Right?!
Bottom Line: Each 2019 Option has a great deal of risk or lack of potential
Miami has a huge hole at QB this upcoming season… but a legitimate player will only fill that hole. The Phins must choose wisely… the wise move might just be beefing up the trenches. If Miami can finally get younger, stronger, and better in the trenches, it will be easier for any QB Miami does start next season.
Still, if they could find the right signal caller in 2019, think of how much steam they’d have going into 2020?!

Luke Falk if he’s healthy should start the season along with drafting Taylor Cornelius most likely in the 6th round or later only if we missed out on Murray or Gaskins.
In addition Admin their’s nothing wrong with drafting a QB in the 3rd or 4th round. Let’s go with our on Rookies. We cannot be afraid to try these Rookies until we can it right. A Back is Back and if the QB has been in the League over two years they are back ups.

The numbers game is smart… could mean you have a load of junk, though. Still, as you said it at least can fill the back up role and be a winning move. I keep hearing they are high on Rudock… hopefully not high as a kite 🙂

Brissett started his career at Florida, but transferred to N.C. State due to a recruiting relationship with head coach Dave Doeren. He’s started every game the past two years, shining against Florida State (32-for-48, 359 yards, three touchdowns) in 2014, which portended a nice senior year that saw him earn honorable mention All-ACC honors (2,662 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, six interceptions).
