Best Deep Threat in the Draft, Devin Smith

The Dolphins really like DeVante Parker the wide receiver from Louisville. They spoke to him at the NFL combine, and they were the first team that had him come to their facilities for a personal interview. He checks all the boxes for what Miami is looking for in a receiver; he is big. (6’3”, 209 pounds) fast, (ran the 40 in 4.45 seconds), he has run after the catch ability and he is an excellent red-zone target. However, with all that being said most of the best sportsbooks in the world are now re-evaluating their draft board, and are saying that Parker will be off the board before Miami even has the chance to think about selecting him with the number 14th selection in the first round. If the top three receivers in the draft are already selected, then Miami may use their second-round pick to select a wide receiver.

One option in the second round could be Devin Smith the wide receiver from Ohio State, who is 6’0”, 196 pounds and ran the 40 in 4.42 seconds. Last year in 2014 he only had 32 receptions, however, he was able to turn those 32 receptions into 886 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He was the definition of a home-run hitter last season, averaging a whopping 27.7 yards per receptions and he turned 37% of his catches into touchdowns. Miami is looking to add more chunk yardage, and touchdowns to their offensive repertoire and Smith can surely help in both areas. He is projected as between a 1st to a 3rd round pick, and the one knock on him is that he needs to improve his route running skills, which is something that can be addressed by the coaching staff.

Whether he is drafted in the 1st or the 3rd round is going to mainly depend on if there is a run on wide receivers in the first round. Some of the best sports betting software in the world as www.AcePerHead.com are saying that this is an extremely deep draft at the wide receiver position and there is a high probability that there is a run on the wide receiver position in the first round. This means that there could be 8 wide receivers selected in the first round alone. So it appears that even though Smith may be a projected to go as late as the 3rd round, the reality is that wide receivers are going to be over-drafted and he could possibly slip into the first round or at the least be selected when Miami is on the clock in the first half of the second round. What do the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans think about selecting Devin Smith in the second round if he is available, and if Miami does not draft a wide receiver in the first round?

I am surprised how all these guys are still clammering for a WR. I would think the last couple of years would have taught them that it’s not the answer. Don’t forget it still takes an accurate throw to do any good. At this point if we want offense we should go for Gurley. At the very least we wont have to worry about the QB connection. I do believe RT will come around but not just yet, and it would be a shame to pass on an outstanding talent for someone that we are not ready for.

Devin Smith is a one trick pony – he does not fit this offensive system esp. with Tanne’s struggles with deep ball accuracy. It’d be Mike Wallace all over again.

Jimmy, I do like Smith. The only concern is his height. We could use some size on the outside (6’3 +) to team up with our TE’s (6’5). We have been 6’0 or below for several years now. Disadvantage in the red zone.

  • I wish we could pick this man for us, but we can look forward for 2016 and draft a top receiver.

Dan, It is a win now league. You think Philbin and Hickey are thinking about 2016? Highly doubt it, if they don’t win now, they may not be here for the 2016 season (hope thats not the case).

  • Comm’on everyone! The bottom line is a receiver did not offer our offence any production last year!! Tannahill got sacked 2-3 time per game. We lost N.Mereno, No offensive-line and we had no runner to replace our productive running back that got injured. A line like sand!!!!!!!!!!! We need to draft a RUNNER, like Gurley or Gordan. We need to give Grimes some help! We need a safety, corner and a guard on offence and defense. Then all you people who want a receiver can pick from a deep field of receivers. We passed on one wide-out and let him go to the Raiders. I guess that why we are looking for a receiver now. We don’t have enough draft choices this year. Coach our players and get the best from what we have and need for 2016.

Exactly Dan, “The bottom line is a receiver did not offer our offence any production last year”. This team needs a true #1, someone that can take top off the defense, so the teams are unable to stack the box. A Parker or White would exactly do that. Either player would improve our running game, improve our passing game and would complete our WRing core, as one of the best youngest WR core in the league to pair up with our young QB, LT, C, LG, RB, TE’s.
To bad Dion Jordan is clueless, cause we would have gotten one of the top guards (Evan Mathis) with a couple years left. That trade obviously is not happening now (thanks again Ireland, really did your homework there!).
