Poor play is expected early in Preseason, but there was plenty of good also
In the 1st Preseason Game, the Dolphins Offense showed promise
Wasn’t it good to finally see the boys play in a game this past Thursday?! Even though they ended up losing, there were good things that left you feeling that the Dolphins could build off them. It’s been a while since there were good vibes this early.
But again, it’s still early, so there’s no certainty how this season will go.
Yes, there were things we can improve on. But that’s the point of camp and Preseason games: improvement. It’s not to say every issue will improve, but it can. So it will be interesting to see how we progress through the preseason. This next game will be a big indicator. What continues, both good and bad, will be more likely what we’ll see in the Regular Season… at least early on before injuries hit.
For not playing a game in 606 days, Tannehill looked pretty good
Tannehill looked fairly sharp in his first game since the 2016 Season. 606 days between games is a long time.
The first play with Tannehill rolling out and completing a pass along the sideline should be a staple of the offense going forward. Hopefully, this will be the case as Tannehill has consistently shown throughout his career that he is effective at throwing on the run. His knee looks like it’s a 100%… this time. His mobility is one of his biggest assets as a QB.
In addition, I like the tempo of the offense with Tannehill getting guys up to the line quickly and keeping the defense on their toes. We’ve been promised an uptempo offense for years. Maybe this is the year that it’s finally delivered?
This is a play Tannehill must make going forward
In my mind, Tannehill biggest improvements from when he last played are reducing his fumbles and improving his clutch throws in the 1st Half. Some complain that Tannehill missed his last two throws Thursday, but the second incompletion looked like he was just sparing Ballage serious pop. There was no sense it getting a back rocked for nothing.
If Tannehill didn’t throw it behind Ballage, he would have been light up like a Christmas Tree. For what? But the 2nd down miss to Amendola is the difference from OK and good.
Plenty of young players did enough to warrant a closer look this Preseason
Tannehill was far from the only player offering promise. There were quite a few players that flashed, even more than he did, especially young players such as Fitzpatrick, Taylor, Baker, Ballage (even though he did have a fumble), Owusu, Allen, and Ford.
Each of these youngsters made plays. But can they sustain this level of play and even improve? There are many storylines of hope this season, for sure. But until that hope turn to reality, fans are on a razor’s edge.
Also, even though Senorise Perry isn’t considered a youngster, he played very well and showed he may be hard to keep off the roster. Not only did he provide a spark at running back, but he also made plays on special teams. The combination of the two will definitely help his chances of making the 53 man roster.
The poor Run Defense gave me flashbacks to the 2016 Season
Now for the concerns: the Defense was a disaster early. The run defense was a highway for Tampa runners. This is a primary reason why many pay per head reviews sites are predicting 2018 to be a rough one, especially after the loss of Suh. Unfortunately, this could be an ongoing issue as the season progresses, because it’s hard to say we improved the talent at that position this offseason. It’s one of the reasons why Phinsnews wanted Vita Vea. Of course, we don’t regret for a minute picking Fitzpatrick. Akeem Spence played well and we like him. But Miami needs a lot more from Godchaux. We definitely need more of the ‘Goodchaux’ of 2017, because he played very poorly…
…also, the pass rush was nonexistent for most of the game.
The Bucs Fitzpatrick continued his career of Dolphins domination. Considering he’s not even the starter, this is very concerning. Miami will see much better QB’s throughout the course of the season. They need to tighten up and quick. Pass rush, pass coverage, and run defense work hand in hand… early on the Dolphins defense on the ground and in the air was poor. Week 2 of Preseason will give a better sign of things to come… Fingers crossed.
