2020 Season Officially Set to Kick Off!

With the 2020 Season officially on, some sort of ‘normalcy’ is back

The NFL 2020 Season is officially on! An agreement was reached yesterday between the league and the NFLPA on Covid-19 protocols.

The new deal also handles a major sticking point about how to spread the financial losses of this season in the coming years. With both sides in agreement, Week 1 of the Regular Season WILL kick off on schedule.

This preseason will have a slimmed-down roster

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “The NFL clubs and the NFL Players Association approved an agreement that broadly resolves all outstanding issues relating to the opening of training camps and starts of the 2020 season. Training camps will begin as scheduled.

The new deal allows opt-outs of participation and the removal of all preseason games for 2020. Another interesting addition is they increased the Practice Squad to a 16 player maximum. This is a sharp increase to the 10 player maximum of 2019. Six extra Practice Squad players is a big plus for a Dolphins team full of so many rookies…

… but the bad news for the Dolphins is the league and NFLPA also agreed to trim rosters down to 80 players by Aug. 16. This is better than the original idea of trimming rosters to 80 or 75 at the start of camp. At least Brian Flores has a chance to make an informed choice by watching the players practice a bit before having to cut them. Still, the Phins have 87 players signed and will have to release 7 mid-way through camp.

This isn’t great news for a team stacked with rookies and no preseason games.

I think the good outweighs the bad, though. You can bet with the best pay per head reviews that Brian Flores already has a bunch of players that are long-shot/ camp bodies that only need a quick look to evaluate. But, he’ll likely have a much harder time cutting players at the end of camp. This will allow him to make a few less tough decisions and stash some extra talent for the season.

Money issues were resolved

Money is always the big sticking point between the owners and players. It was pretty surprising that both parties resolved it so quickly. But, I think they were all well aware of how precarious a position the NFL is in right now. Good for them that wiser heads prevailed.

The new agreement plans to spread any 2020 revenue shortfall over four years beginning in 2021, which will have a cap minimum of $175 million. The 2020 cap of $198.2 million remains unchanged. So far nothing has been reported on the eventuality of the 2020 shortfalls being worse than expected.

Well, at least we have NFL football coming our way, Phins fans. Maybe this little bit of normalcy is just the beginning. Let’s hope! Go Phins!!! — GET CASINO ACTION WITH A PAY-PER-HEAD CASINO SOFTWARE PACKAGE.
