What Trading back in the First will do for this Draft

The Dolphins are thin at linebacker and the boys at the sportsbooks should be betting that they draft at least one linebacker in the upcoming draft.

The Dolphins are already at a disadvantage having traded away their 3rd round pick, and there are insiders telling me that they are extremely interested in trading back into the 3rd round. This would probably mean that the Dolphins are going to be extremely active in trading back in the first round. If they do trade back in the first round that would give them another 2nd or a new 3rd round pick. In that case, either of those two picks would be in the range of quite a few very good linebackers. One of those would include Clemson’s Inside Linebacker Stephone Anthony.

Anthony is 6’2” 243 pounds and ran the 40 in 4.56 seconds. He has been a very productive player for Clemson for the past 3 seasons. Last year he had 69 tackles, with 10.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, 3 passes defended, 1 interception and 2 forced fumbles and in 2013 he had 131 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 1 interception, and 5 passes defended. As the off-season has progressed Anthony has been climbing up the charts due to his excellent showing during the entire week of the Senior Bowl, and his better than expected 40 time and field drills at the combine. He needs to work a little bit on his coverage skills, but he appears to have the tools to develop into a quality 3 down starter.

Anthony is projected to be either a 2nd or 3rd round pick, which means that if Miami wants to select him they will either have to do it in the second round or trade back at some point to pick up an extra pick in one of those two rounds. This is a deep draft and Miami has multiple positions of need, which makes trading back a logical move.

There are not going to be a lot of linebackers selected in the first round, however just like the Guard position, the sweet spot for these two positions in the draft is in the 2nd and 3rd round, so Miami would be wise to start lining up teams that they could trade back with in the first round. I would love for Miami to trade back at least two times in the 1st or 2nd round so they can stockpile two or three 2nd round picks or 3rd round picks, and use those to select Guards, LB’s and WR’s. Most of the boys at the local sportsbook would say that Guard and Linebacker are two of the easier positions in terms of having a smooth transition to the NFL. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins News and sports betting software fans think about the Dolphins about trading back and also selecting Anthony in the process?

  • I have a feeling they trade down a couple of spots in the first, draft a top running back {Gurley or Gordon}, draft a top MLB and one or two for O line and sign a free agent wide receiver after the draft {Jennings}, as well as draft CB or BPA in later rounds. They use the compensatory picks from trading Starks, Odrick and Clay to draft best wide receiver next year. Just have that feeling?

Regardless to stay or trade out. These recruits can start this season maybe not day one.

Trade to spot 20th with the Eagle take: 1st round Camron Erving C FSU
    2nd round Stephone Anthony
4th round Jesse James TE 6 Penn State (We Need) or Steven Nelson CB Oregon
5th round Justin Cox Mississippi State
5th Nick O’Leary TE FSU or Charles Gaines CB
Sixth round: 191th overall selection Deontay Greenberry, WR, Houston

Scenario: 1 With a possible trade back with Eagle:
    Eagle should give up a
3rd 84th pick: David Johnson RB or Jeremy Langford RB
4th 113th pick: Steven Nelson CB Oregon or Tony Lippett WR Michigan State https://youtu.be/fI7N3YXpi74?t=41
6th 145th pick: Ramik Wilson ILB Georgia

Unfortunately this year we have more needs that can possibly be addressed with the picks we have
We are almost forced to trade back to to get the number of starters that we need. Last year we traded back and we ended up with two great additions to the team in James and Landry. Could we have done better by not trading back last year?
Maybe, maybe not, but we came out pretty good
This year there are definite starters available in the second and third rounds. We need to pick up at least four starters for our team on this draft. The only way we can be guaranteed of doing that is totrade back.
I don’t think we have players we can trade to pick up more draft picks
Next year we will have at least 3 additional compensatory picks for the players we lost in free agency this year (Starks. Odrick, Clay) So next year we can go for the pro bowlers, best availables and or trade up.
I am sure that the GM staff has the right plan for our team whatever that plan is
We no longer have Ireland making those decision. We now have a better evaluator of talent in Hickey and I am sure tennebaum will put his 2 cents in.
The sinergism of these 2 GM’s deciding who to pick will result on getting more quality starters for the team
I see us trading back at least twice
Maybe once in each of the first 2 rounds and getting 2 additional picks in the top 100
This is luckily for us a deeper draft at the positions of need for us this year.
If we can end up with 5 starters that are quality players that would be a masterful draft
I guess we can only hope that the front office has a good plan and can execute it .
It’s got to be playoffs this year.

For anyone to come away with 4 starters from any draft is unlikely, no matter how many picks you have. If we come away from this draft with 4 starters we are on our way to playing some post season football for many years to come. I also don’t think we are forced to trade down, when in fact if one of the top 3 WRs are there @ 14, we may just select said player and focus on round 2. Last years draft was decent, this years free agency was pretty good as well. If this draft is anything like those 2 we will be in good shape.
Believe this staff has a plan already in place for this draft.

We need to get at least 2 starters from this draft, hopefully 3, and getting 3 starters from one draft would be tremendous

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Yes I believe we trade back at least twice in this draft. This draft is especially deep in Guards, WR, Running back, Linebacker all positions we need. 4 or 5 starters from a draft would be a miracle, i think 3 is more reasonable to hope for

I would only take Anthony if the value is there, his weakness is in coverage, and if that is the case, will he be a three down LBer from the start? Not so sure if that is the case here. In a perfect scenario, Perryman slides to us in the second round, which more and more looks like may happen, at this point he could be a reach, and if we had a third round pick he would be perfect value there. So trading back to pick a third and then selecting Perryman would be idea.

Is there any truth to Miami moving up to get K.White? I hope so, cause he is a beast and putting him in the mix w/Laundry/Stills would be the best young WR group in the league. But, I believe this is a smoke screen for the opposite = trading down. Trade down get Green-Beckham/Perriman/Strong later in the first.

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Trading up for White has some truth to it. However I am not sure if Miami will pull the trigger on it considering they would pretty much be mortgaging this entire draft for one player. We have multiple positions of need, so as much as I also like White, Miami needs other players at other positions in this draft that can step in immediately and start

  • If I had my choice for the first pick in the draft, not trading back but a quality first choice, Just like Ricky Williams, Walter Peyton, Emmit Smith, and on and on. TAKE: TODD GURLY., and sign N. M. Then take your receivers, line backers and, corners. But take the best available running back in the draft!!! In the past we took multiple corners safeties and ended up with one Grimes, I will admit we need some one to help Grimes, But we need a quality running back. Every NFL team that has a great has a RUNNER, WINS.. I forgot L.T(.Florida State) has Ronald/ A Corner. R.Darby, And Michigan State has a safety. A wide out @ UCF Perriman.A great tight end MAXX WILLIAMS Great hands Blocker / receiver. We need to take the best available players @ each position needed!!! Or try at least. (Jordan Williams,)Wisc/Michael Bennett, Jordan Philips Ohio State.Oklahoma has D.T. PJ Williams, Nelson Agholar Dual threat receiver/punt returner.Amare Cooper Reciever Alabama.
    Stephan Anthony/ L.B. Buckly Brooks T.E. USC.

    • Dunner

How about the New England Patriots??? They do not and never had a great running back and yet they keep winning. You do understand that we only have 6 picks and no 3rd round pick. If drafting was as easy as you just explained, teams could reduce half their staff.
Miami needs a difference maker, this is one of the deepest drafts at several positions there has been in many years. Miami is positioned to go in many different directions, and this is the ideal draft to be able to do so.

If we draft Gurly then we are not going to re-sgin Knowshon Moreno
