What is Left for Miami to Do?

Poe is still one of the Free Agents left.

Poe is still one of the Free Agents left.

Miami still has holes left to fill

The Miami Dolphins accomplished a lot last week, by resigning some of their own, and making trades and signings for players at positions of need. However there is still plenty of work to do.

Miami will meet DT Dontari Poe on Wednesday, which would be a great signing, because he would fill a position of need at DT to pair with Suh and Phillips, and he is a force on the interior. However, Poe has already met with the Colts, Jags, and Falcon without signing a contract, and there is still the Raiders that want to have a meet and greet with him, so free bookie software have Poe’s price being a bit inflated due to a potential bidding war among his suitors. Maybe in years past, Miami would be interested in being the highest bidder, but not this year, so our chances of landing Poe are quite small.

The one thing floating around that looks good for Miami is that Poe might be looking to sign a one year contract to re-inflate his value… playing next to Suh would help this effort tremendously. So, there is a chance he is wearing aqua in 2017.

If Miami does not go with Poe then, I expect them to look elsewhere for another DT that they can add to their rotation. Two other options at this position that Miami may pursue are Johnathan Hankins from the Giants or Bennie Logan from the Eagles.

Miami also definitely needs a Guard, because they still have one Guard position not even filled, and even though they just signed Ted Larsen, they need more help in the O-line interior. A few Guards left on the market that may pique the Dolphins interest are Jahri Evans from the Saints, Andrew Gardner from the 49ers, and Chris Scott from the Panthers. Evans is the best of the bunch. However, he has been in the league for 11 years and nearly breaking down. Gardner was originally drafted by the Dolphins in 2009, but has bounced around the league with 6 teams over 8 years. At the very least, schematically he fits well with the type of blocking scheme that we run. Guard will also be a position that we should use one of our first 3 draft picks on.

Poe could fill one of the holes Miami has left to fill

We also still need a linebacker to pair with Alonso and Timmons. There has been some increased chatter that the Dolphins would like to bring back Koa Misi. However, this would depend on him actually recovering fully from his previous neck injury, and also taking a pay cut. A healthy Koa Misi would be a nice fit with Alonso and Timmons. The problem is, he’s constantly getting injured and is probably not a player that we can count on for a full 16 game season.

Lastly, Miami would like to add another cornerback. This group did surprisingly well last season, and showed a lot of promise with youngsters Howard, Lippett and McCain. However Miami wants another capable body, and is rumored to be showing interest in the Bills ex-cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman.  If they do not go with him, there are still plenty of other CB’s available such as Sam Shields, Morris Claiborne, and Patrick Robinson.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about what Miami’s next plan of action is going to be?

Cunningham or Reddick in the first, followed by Jordan Willis in the second. I know we need a guard(s) and I agree, but we may have to wait till the fifth round. That can be a dangerous move, but the third round pick may (SHOULD) be used on a different player. Someones misfortune may be our fortune. Sidney Jones tore his achillies at this pro day. Jones was a hands down top 15 pick and considered by many as the top CB in the draft. This could be a sort of Tunsil find for different reasons. Now it appears that Jones will sldie to the late second and probably the third round. We need to spend the third round pick on Jones if he is there, no we HAVE TO! So he red shirts majority of his rookie season, but when he comes back, he steps right in and replaces Maxwell. We could then have 2 top tier CBs in Howard and Jones at very very low price for 3-4 years before second contracts. Again, Jones’ misfortune may be our fortune. This is a move that Tannebaum, Grier, Gase need to pull off.

They will go with Misi at OLB.

The 1st round pick will likely be an OG because there is no starting quality in the later rounds and they are desperate to protect TH. I’m betting Larsen won’t win a starting position in camp. Bushrod will be our starting RG

The 2/3 picks will likely be LB/S depending on bpa at those positions. They need a rookie S as insurance if Allen doesn’t pan out. Thomas is not insurance at S. The need for a rookie LB is obvious.

I expect they will try to package the 5th round picks to move up and get a DT. Hayes was restructured to a 1 year contract with less money. He will be 32. They need a rookie at DT to coach up.

As always, if a top ten prospect drops to #22, all bets are off.

Waiting for the Landry extension soon. I expect 10-12 mpy with a high guarantee. That number will affect who else they can still afford in FA.

I think it’s fair point, although I could see them going 2nd round with G… Lb’s will be highly sought after and will fade quick in the top tier. DE’s are less sought and G’s too. I am not a expert, but I still see DE, DT, LB and G or some stud dropping as on the board. I think I like Feeney at LG best.

  • Lemmus

“Forrest Lamp, G, Western Kentucky” would have been a 3/4 round pick in the last 3 drafts

    • admin

I like Feeney better at LG and I think that is a key position. Lamp is good and better RB, but Feeney has better feet.

  • Fritz

With Poe signing with Atlanta, the Phins will be looking elsewhere for a DT ie draft or other free agent. In previous posts, I said he would not be in a Dolphins uniform.
I also posted that the Dolphins could bring back Bushrod and they did. I will now predict that he will perform better at right guard this season simply because he has had a year at the position under his belt. Now, if Larsen performs well at LG, the OL will be fine so the only needs left are DT and LB.

You nailed it Fritz. I like Bushrod returning, he is insurance and will be a good back up. I still think they will draft a LG though, and keep Larsen on the right side. But, well will see …

      • Lemmus

…sigh, shakes head …Larsen and Bushrod?
…there are 12 DCs who would absolutely love to see that OG combo start
…TH’s knee, otoh, has a slightly different opinion

Read a good article by Salguero that made me think… working on an article about it will some of my extra’s best article I read of his in a while … trying to find it again. I’s about half the opponents running the 3-4 and what that means for Guards.

Actually I kept thinking of the Poe from a few years ago. He was not very good this year … like 90th against the run. I’m not disappointing and 8 mill might have been to much for a guy expected to get 20-25 snaps a game.

You know my draft knowledge is low… gonna try and look them up. But, you have me in this area by leaps and bounds.

We will be okay without Poe. There are some really good DT that will land in MIami Dolphins draft picks, they really should stop giving away draft picks. We seem to always come up short in picks.

Again, I wa reading up on Poe and the Poe I remembered wasn’t the one playing in 2016… I am glad he didn’t get picked up. Still leaves a hole though.
