What about the Coordinators?

Everyone who is not living under a rock has already heard that Joe Philbin will be returning for his 4th season as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins next year. However, what about his offensive and defensive coordinators, will they be returning as well?

Bill Lazor is completing his first season as the Dolphins offensive coordinator, and the best bookie software sites like www.AcePerHead.com with any intelligence will say that Lazor has been a drastic improvement over Sherman. For starters, the team is only 37 points away from scoring 400 points, which a Dolphin team has not done since the Dan Marino era. Last season the Dolphins averaged just over 19 points a game, and this season they have averaged just over 24 points a game, an increase in 5 points a game is a huge improvement in the NFL. Secondly, he has helped Tannehill have his best season as a pro, with his QBR rating at around 93 for the season, and he has already thrown 26 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. Lazor has also figured out a way to utilize Tannehill’s legs and athleticism. As long as another team does not offer Lazor a head coaching job, then Miami must keep Lazor. If these players get a chance to have another season in Lazor’s offense, then there is a high probability that the offense will be even more productive next year.

Kevin Coyle has been the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins for the past 3 years alongside Joe Philbin. There was a point in the middle of the season, where the Dolphins Defense was ranked 2nd best in the league, however that was only a mirage from playing against poor teams. The Defense has quickly evaporated from being a strength to now becoming a weakness. They are ranked 8th in net total yards, but that is a deceiving statistic because a team does not need to gain a lot of yards to score points. A more reliable statistic is that the Dolphins are allowing 22.4 points per game which are ranked 17th in the league, and their once stout rushing defense has now been diminished to being more porous the sieve. They are ranked 24th worst in the league and they are allowing 122.2 yards per game on the ground. Another negative thing about this year’s defense is that they have trouble holding on to a lead, and on two occasions they were beaten in the last seconds of the game.

Based on all this I would say it would be a wise idea to find a new defensive coordinator. If Rex Ryan does not get another heading coaching job, then he may want to be the defensive coordinator for Miami so he can still get the chance to go against and beat Bill Belichick. Either way, Philbin and Hickey did a great job in finding an upgrade for the offensive coordinator, so hopefully, they can do the same in searching for a new defensive coordinator.

they should bring back Mike Nolan. We were a top 10 D under him ( until coyle took over. the D has regressed every year since..).

Under coyle.., it didn’t matter what the opposing team did on 1st or 2nd down.., because, even if it was 3rd and 20, the D would give up a 1st down.. ( which is just one of many reasons why coyle needs to go.. others being – inability to adjust at halftime, inability to properly use players, bad play calling.., etc..).

failbin was forced to fire sherman ( imagine if he was still here ), so unless Ross gives an ultimatum it is unlikely.., but coyle needs to go.

Yes I agree Mike Nolan was definitely a better Defensive coach then Coyle. I was never really a fan of Coyle from the first day he was hired. The defense has been average his entire time here, and like you mentioned Ghost of 72, before he stepped in Mike Nolan had this team as a top 10 defense. So the D has basically regressed each of his three seasons ending with its last 6 game melt down this season

The D has been responsible for the close losses at the end of the 4th Q in all these games.

Its always been and always will be Defense wins championships.

Fire Coyle, find LBers, find CB’s, and a young stud DT.
