Wanna Be Tough? Get A Blocking Back!

Okay, we are hearing the mantra “TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH”! Okay, that means we are going to run the football, play the power game, and enforce our will – at least a portion of the time. Gone is Clay, so no H-back or fullback – Yes fullbacks are dinosaurs, but even Bellicheat uses them. Currently, we must find our toughness from a 3 wide set or double tight-ends. Hmmmmm, I’ll buy Sims as a blocker at near 270, but “Stone” and Jordan? A slot back won’t always force the Nickle D and can’t work the inside on short-yardage situations…So what is our play on filling the void?

James Casey, an H-back/ FB, was just cut by the Broncos…we need him, or someone like him, to enforce his will on LB’s and SS in order to make this “TOUGH” mantra come true. I’m not saying it’s “teacup time” and a cloud of dust like the Parcells days, but someone inside or on the perimeter from the skill position must set the edge or spread the hole. I believe in our backs, but none are Barry or Peterson and we need someone hammering their cap between the defenders’ numbers saying, “Wake up son, it’s game time.

Let’s say Albert is back…okay, he’s one on one as is James; the three inside (2 guards and center) are dealing with two interior defenders (Pouncey or Jamil can’t handle a DT on their own); Sims picks up SLB – who else do you trust as a blocker? And God forbid Sims is dinged or goes down -again. He’s had a severe concussion, so you really don’t know what the effects of it will be this season. So at best our blocking TE situation even to the best pay per head reviews in the world is tenuous at best.

If Miami wants to curtail its finesse ball then they need the horses to run it. It will be interesting to see who will step up or be found to fill this limited, yet essential void in this new ‘Phins persona. Maybe some of you Fin Fans can help me figure out what Campbell’s play will be on our offensive enforcer. Go Fins!!!

I think with Philbin gone the loss of Clay will hurt more. We just don’t have an H-back, much less a FB…

Hope Coach Campbell considers/implements a two tight-end set. We have 3 capable TEs. Use Cameron and Simms/Stoneburner in the two TE set and Parker as the “X” and Laundry as the “Z”. Doesn’t have to be our base or used every series, but use it (I wouldn’t mind being used as our base “O”). As far as fullback, would be tough to find one feasible at this point of the season, probably could scan the practice rosters and find a decent one from a team that uses full backs.
I would like to see a trade for a guard!

We do have a defensive tackle who played fullback in college? why not him for starter? A good offensive coordinator will ensure balance meaning that his offense can run the ball and pass. One demenstional offense is a failure.

Look at the teams who are successful this season (they have a successful run game)
The Dolphins offense cannot be like the old coyote in the cartoons chasing the road runner never learning from his mistake. Learn how to run the ball please. Everybody has to block somebody?

This is a real practical solution
I hope someone is listening because after the jets game it is no longer a secret that our 2 guards are going to continue to be bad
Please put Simms or someone else to protect Tannehill and maybe to open running lanes

We never addressed the OG position during the off-season. Millions of fans screaming to draft at #2 and also pick-up a veteran OG can’t all be wrong. I was one of them! We did not address the O-Line, and Ross kept Philbin. The=loosing season. I hope Hickey & Tannenbaum can work out a trade or pick up someone who has been released. The coaching changes needed to happen. These guys did not want to play for Philbin & Coyle!

Someone has been reading my suggestion. I said last week when coach Cambell took over he should go out and get a couple of big tight ends and sit them behind Tannehill at fullback spots. They can read and react for blocking wherever needed and also be there for quick release or screen pass. I thought this would help our anemic ol. And also get rid of Dallas Thomas no amount of blocking tight ends will help him.

Agreed, especially about mr. Thomas, some plays look like he thinks he’s a matador pivoting to let the bull run by! Yes we need to run to free up the pass and be balanced.

I read em’ and you nailed it. With Philbin out and a move towards toughness we were exposed a bit with our personnel not fitting the image. I am an old school back with a love of the running game.
