Urbik And Bushrod Are Likely Dolphins Starting Guards

Urbik And Bushrod Are Likely Dolphins Starting Guards.

Urbik will look godlike compared to the poor play of Dolphins guards in 2015.

Urbik And Bushrod Are Likely Miami Starting Guards

Just about every Fin Fan wanted the Miami Dolphins to move mountains to make a huge upgrade at guard in 2016. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that massive upgrade likely isn’t happening. It might not even happen in the Draft, unless the draft presents a good one, gift wrapped with a bow, because the Dolphins have zero intention of reaching for one. I’m not saying I like it. I don’t. But, that’s what the tea-leaves are saying: Urbik and Bushrod will likely be Miami’s starting guards.

Should we all scream out like Bill Paxton’s character in Aliens 2 : “That’s it! Game over, man! Game over!”

Look, I’m not going to blow smoke up your tailpipe, there is no silver lining saying all is well with Miami’s offensive line. These new guards aren’t going to the Hall Of Fame anytime soon – unless they buy a ticket. The Dolphins three best O-linemen Albert, Pouncy, and James have been down so much they remind me of the Life Alert commercial where senior citizens are shouting “I’ve fallen down and I can’t get up”! Football gambling fans are smart to bet that this season will likely repeat the trend in some form.

Urbik And Bushrod are competent, reasonably priced stop gaps.

While some of the reservations about the “new” guards are true, some are not.

First, both are not old. Yes, they are in the final years of their prime, but not old. Bushrod is 31 and Urbik 30.

Second is their skill level, while not stellar, they aren’t the trash Miami had last season.

Kraig Urbik is a veteran guard and a big fella at 6’5”, 324. Last year, the Bills moved from Zone to Man blocking and Urbik didn’t fit the new scheme as well. Urbik ranked 48 out of 81 guard and is an immediate upgrade. Sad as it is to say, a solid starter is light years better than what Miami fielded last year. On the bright side of things, I found an interesting note on Urbik that showed, he has some flash.

Pro Football focus’ 2013 ALL AFCE Team: “Urbik continues to fly under the radar as one of the league’s solid guards. He ranked 21st overall at the position, including a +4.8 pass block grade that ranked 19th. He also came in eighth in Pass Blocking Efficiency at 97.3.”

Bushrod is another big guy at 6’5” 320lbs, and while spending his career as a tackle, he is a former Pro Bowler – though many would say they are “Pouncy” esq awards. His main weakness throughout his career has been speed rushers. The move inside will eliminate much of that issue issue. He has practiced in all five line spots in front of the current coach, Adam Gase. Since Gase went full on to get him, Bushrod will be a strong indicator of Gase’s acumen in evaluation. Bushrod is a solid starter and upgrade over Thomas.

Will they dominate – very, very doubtful. Will they be competent – likely.

The downside, Bushrod has recurring shoulder problems, and Urbik or Bushrod aren’t getting any better.

Fin Fans, management is spending this season regrouping, stocking picks, clearing up the cap, and getting the foundation set. Next year, they will be loaded with compensatory draft picks and a ship shape cap and that’s been the goal of this regime. We all wanted to build through the draft. We all wanted to get the ship headed in the right direction. This is want rebuilding looks like. Adam Gase has stated: “We are more than one player away.” Truth hurts, but it’s the truth. Go Fins!!!

Jimmy The Fins Best players to improved the Offensive line.
Most likely to be starters in the NFL the Dolphins has linemen opportunities each round?

Taylor Decker, OT Projected 19th 3rd Best Offensive Tackle 1st Rounder

Cody Whitehair OG Projected 43rd 1st Pick Round 2
Vadal Alexander OG Projected 46th 2nd best Round 2
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Willie Beavers offensive Tackle Projected 5th rounder
IN OUR VIEW: Beavers is a nice looking prospect with all of the physical tools you look for in a left tackle. He had a good outing against Michigan State and more than held his own against star defensive end Shilique Calhoun. Beavers just has to fine-tune his game and play with better technique. He will come to the NFL with loads of experience after being a three-year starter at Western Michigan.
–Jamie Newberg (1/13/16) me. He lines up with a firm anchor and rarely plays in reverse with quick eyes and smarts to pick up extra blockers. Very quick-minded and never takes a play off.
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Alex Lewis Offensive Tackle 6th Rounder
IN OUR VIEW: Lewis has the talent for the next level, but does he have the maturity and level head required for the NFL? He is an assignment sound blocker who gets the job done, but his baggage ? on and off the field ? will take him off several draft boards around the league.
    –Dane Brugler (1/18/16)
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Stephen Nembot 7th Rounder

IN OUR VIEW: While still quite raw, Nembot’s exciting blend of traits could earn him a surprisingly high grade from NFL teams. With some patience, he could develop into a starter at the next level, likely remaining outside at tackle because of his length and athleticism. However, there is cause for concern after struggles during Shrine Game practices, where he was routinely called out by coaches for playing too high and had struggle adjusting to multiple rushers.
    –Rob Rang (1/19/16)

    Keith Lumpkin: 7th Rounder
Keith Lumpkin OT 39 Rutgers Lumpkin was best known for his tape against Randy Gregory of Nebraska last season. Before Gregory had a misstep on a drug test at the combine, he was considered a top-five pick as a pass-rusher, and Lumpkin closed him out for their entire matchup.

The Fins used to have the best pair of defensive backs listed below.

Two of Miami Dolphins top Corners

He played college football for the University of Louisville, and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Madison also played for the New York Giants. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
Madison was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. Madison made the Pro Bowl for four straight years from 1999-2002. On March 1, 2006 the Dolphins released him.[1] He finished his career with the Dolphins starting 127 of 138 games, recording 353 tackles, a sack, 31 interceptions and two touchdowns.

For much of his career as a Miami Dolphin, Sam Madison played alongside fellow cornerback Patrick Surtain. During their time together, Madison and Surtain were one of the most prolific cornerback tandems in NFL history, posting a combined 697 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 60 interceptions, and 2 touchdowns.

That being said why not have Sam Madison and Surtain show up when the Fins are evaluating Corners?

Two defenders stand above 6’0″ and stole the show this week. The first is Deon Bush of Miami, who was a three-time honorable mention candidate in the ACC as a safety. Mike Mayock of NFL Network seemed to believe that Bush could be the answer to a team’s problem in neutralizing tight ends.

The long cornerback to watch is Michael Jordan of Missouri Western. No, not that Michael Jordan, but he has NFL bloodlines and 16 career interceptions.

    Miami’s Dolphins Top Corners Selections:

Most practicle selection would be for Miami to trade out of the 1st pick for more picks. ( Maybe the fins could get another second rounder then the most Practical pick:

** Eli Apply Ohio State would be a late 1st rounder rated about 29th pick.**

Most of the best Cornerback would be in the late second early 3rd round.
    60th William Jackson III 6’1
    71st Rashard Robinson 6’2 LSU
77th Artie Burns 6.0 Miami Stay another year in college possible 1st rounder)
Considering a second Corner this is the way to GO!
Value player/ A Corner Back with Kick Return value
5th or 6th rounder ranked 161st: Morgan Burns CB Rank 20 Kansas State
In addition to being one of the best kickoff specialist entering the 2016 NFL Draft, Burns also started 12 games at cornerback, recording 38 tackles and 11 passes defended. Overall, Burns played in 48 career games starting 24 of those at cornerback and helped Kansas State to a 34-18 record and a Big 12 Championship in 2012 and four-straight bowl appearances.

Interview by Sun Sentinel with Dolphins Coach Gase said tailback and cornerback are the Dolphins’ biggest needs heading into April’s draft.

He seemed excited about Jay Ajayi’s upside but pointed out that he wants to feature two tailbacks.

“We’ve gone after a few in free agency. Reason we’re going to do that is to have more than one guy. I like multiple backs,” Gase said. “We’re going to need to develop that stable of backs. The options will present themselves. We need to stay patient.”

Staying patient has been the Dolphins’ approach all offseason, which is a change from recent years, when the Dolphins typically spent big in free agency. The largest contract they’ve handed out this offseason was Mario Williams’ two-year, $17 million deal.

The Dolphins continued to add veteran depth Tuesday when offensive guard Kraig Urbik, who has started 57 NFL games, signed a deal.

“There’s a lot more work to be done, obviously. We’re in the third week of March. We haven’t even had the draft, so with that said I’m optimistic, I’m hopeful,” said Tannenbaum, who is entering his second season in his role with the Dolphins. “I’m very optimistic about the trajectory of our team, not only this year but well into the future.”

It is a upgrade from last years guards (all 3). I’m still hoping that we land at least 1 starting guard via the draft. These moves may give Miami the opportunity to wait till the 4th/5th round(s) to get a O-Lineman or two (in their eyes). If that is the case, Miami could focus on drafting a CB/LBer/DE/RB, in any particular order, giving them the best opportunity to land impactful players in the first 3 rounds (hopefully). Not that guards are not impact players, but are much easier to land in the later part of the draft.

…I’d like to sing along with the Monkees “I’m a believer” but I just can’t …Urbik is an upgrade over Thomas/Turner but that’s like saying a gravel road is an upgrade over a dirt road when you’re driving a junker with no springs …its still gonna be a rough ride

…Bushrod has never played guard from his high school days to now …he’s an OT that’s an apparent upgrade over Fox as a backup at the position, something we do need …but a guard? …I’m not buying into that just yet …great big IF there …look what happened when our pro-bowl center moved to guard for one year …he got bulldozed …so no, not singing along on this one …I’d sooner believe he’s been a natural born guard all along and just miscast by every coach he’s ever had …yeah, right

…and then of course that still leaves Thomas/Turner/Douglas as our backups …unless we get a clue and cut at least Thomas …my single biggest concern about our new coaches is that they didn’t cut him before they cut Fox …I mean WTF does he have to do? …personally put Tannehill in the hospital?

…I’d love to think our starting guards are studying for their finals right now at some major conference college …that our FO has had major brain surgery that implanted enough smarts to draft guards high and often …but then I’d be singing along again with the Monkees on “Daydream Believer”

…yeah yeah, I know …how old do I have to be to still be singing along with the Monkees …don’t remind me, eh 🙂

    FINSFANS

I know we are discussing Linemen But what linemen return punts/CB etc. considering by the 6th round the Fins have drafted their CB. Maybe not? But what do we know about Burns and how valuable to the Fins could burns be Gaining good Field position on the Field. Aren’t we tired of Dolphins standards make it to the 20th yards line off a kick and fair catch a punt return?

    6th round 166th Morgan Burns CB 161st

The Wildcats best return man in the history of the school earned All-America honors for his production. He set the single-season kickoff-return yards record (1,138) at Kansas State, which ranks third all-time in Big 12 history.

Burns tied the school and Big 12 records for kickoff-return touchdowns (four). He ranked third in the country and first in the Big 12 in kickoff return average (33.5). Burns set another Big 12 record with four straight conference player of the week honors over the final month of the season. It coincided in extending the Kansas State streak of three consecutive seasons with the Wildcats having the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year winner, following in the footsteps of Tyler Lockett (2013-14).

Burns was recognized as a first-team All-American by USA Today, CBS, and Fox Sports and second team Associated Press and Sporting News for outstanding production on special teams

Worthy of 6th round consideration a player we dont possess YET.

Albert OT, James OT, Pouncey Center, Urbik And Bushrod your starting Guards.

We have discussed Trading back etc. for more picks. But here is another possibility (A Steal)

Miami could schedules a visit with Alex Lewis OT to make an Evaulation about drafting him. There is no doubt he will be a starter for the Dolphins. Just the Fins need to make an accessment about him I would draft him in the 7th round. He should be in the 1st round But An off the field incident prevented that it was not drugs etc. It was a fight landing him in jail for a month having to set out 2013 season transfered from Colorado college afterwards working his way as a Nebraska Husker becoming team captain etc.

    7. 193rd Alex Lewis OT 200 (17) He stands about 6’6 about 312 Senior from Temple Arizona.

Has an adequate frame for the position with long arms and natural knee bend, keeping his feet moving and underneath him at all times. Resets well at the point of attack to anchor down and stay balanced. Shows the flexibility and quickness to sink and engage.

He moves well for a taller blocker and was one of the most consistent prospects on the West squad at the Shrine Game. Named team captain as a senior. Academic All-Big Ten in 2014.

Maybe our Dolphins Nuckle Heads will scheduled a visit with him!

Jimmy Urbik And Bushrod would definitely relieved our nursing offensive line.

Albert, James and Pouncey are very good. They suffer from Durability issued, So How do we keep them healthy to stay on the field? Urbik and Bushrod are Dolphins now! So how do you keep them healthy?

I would think minimized the Busted plays, Balanced the Run/Passed game, have a quicker releaed when passing. I Think that the Dolphins are a Nuckle Head Organization due to not learining anything from season to season since 2008 last D Title.
