Uhh-OOhh, No Restructure For Wake!?

wake

Jason La Canfora is reporting through CBS Sports that Cameron Wake and the Miami Dolphins could not come to an agreement on a contract restructure. With the 2016 free agency season about to begin on March 9, the Dolphins are one of the teams with very little cap space going into free agency. Wakes is scheduled to make $9.8 mill in 2016, and a $1.4 million dead cap hit if he is cut.

The Wake restructure was a very important part of Miami’s plans to get free agents and also to keep Wake as a Dolphin. This “set back” by no means demands that Wake will be cut or that a restructure isn’t going to happen, but the smooth sailing that was thought to happen now has hit some waves. It is also telling in that this regime isn’t desperate to free up cash for free agency. Being $9 million under the cap at present with an 11 million raise in the cap gives the Dolphins roughly $20 million to spend. While this is a lot of money, it doesn’t take the best pay per head review sites to realize that it doesn’t cover Vernon, Miller, Matthews resigning, not to mention any additional players. So either cuts are coming or the Dolphins are going to have tight reigns on this FA.

According to media, Cam and Miami are at an impasse w contract extension/talk. Don’t these guys get it???? Take a look at Brady, some times it does benefit you to take a little less or spread out to get more. That is why Brady is who he is. Maybe both Wake and OV should take a little advice from Mr.Brady, he gets it, that is why his teams win!!!!!

May be time to let Cam walk, good luck, but if you and/or OV can’t work together as a team to put the necessary talent around you, Sayonara.

Admin I am probably wrong also but I am not a big a Elliot fan as some. He has struggled w blocking (which I am sure will come) and he lacks consistency as a receiver. He does have elite running style for this level though. He may be a complete RB in the NFL down the road, but for a first round pick as a RB, you need instant every down production. I just believe there is better value else where for Miami right now. My RB sleeper is N.D. RB CJ Prosise (3rd/4th round range), he tends to run upright (so did Eric Dickerson and Adrian Peterson), ball security and tempo. These weaknesses can be adjusted, and w only 1 year as a RB, he should continue to improve on all aspects of his game.

We have many holes to filled Yes! Draft “D” Running back 1st. Quick talking about the running game. Quick being Mediocre! Miami Needs a Serious Run Game.

2015 Miami started out week 1 Rank #15th then regressing up to Ranking # 30. Just pulled the web site up listed below.

And many Fans are looking for the same season.

Ryan Tannehill was surrounded by weapons this season but finished with a career-worst 43.1 Total QBR, ranking 29th out of 33 qualified quarterbacks.

Since beating the Texans 44-26, the Dolphins are 2-7. Their two wins were by a combined three points. Their losses have been decided by a combined 102 points.

Since dropping 44 points on the Texans in Week 7, the Dolphins have gone 2-6, averaging 16.4 points per game. They haven’t scored more than 24 points in a game in that time.

The Dolphins have been outscored by a league-worst 34 points in the first quarter this season. Their only score in the first quarter this season was a field goal against the Jaguars.

Monday’s loss officially eliminated the Dolphins from the playoffs. They have missed the playoffs each of the past seven seasons, the longest drought in franchise history.

One thing about the Miami Heat Pat Riley is that he knows how to win and not affraid of success.

Despite our horrific guard play, the running game was not as bad as it may seem up front. It had more to do w mentality. Our coaching staff did this team and Miller a HUGE disservice in the running game. We had a league LOW for average attempts per game at 21.2, that was only 34% of the total offensive plays (league low). I mean there were games that we had single digit running plays. It starts w mentality, scheme, and then the O-Line, then RB, and we did not have any of the first three in place.

The Fins definitely abandon the run prematurely almost every game. The Dolphins would get behind in games and would attempt to catch up by passing. But strike out 1,2,3 on the bench. The defense can only hold and offense some many plays without resting. Dunner what I never understood is the Dolphins will not commit to having a balance offense. Tanny is not that QB he needs a well balance offense to succeed like any QB.

Miami never know who they have due to imcompetence coaching. Players never fully developed when the team is playing panic football. I believed in running the ball more than passing. The sad part is Lamar Miller the Fins dont know his potential.

        • Dunner

So true. It has been a sad state. I do think that Gase will strive for balance, and even if we struggle to run the ball initially, he is bright enough to create good enough schemes to run the ball effectively. At least I’m hoping that is the case.

    • admin

Hey, Steve I get all of that, and I’m likely wrong, but something about watching him doesn’t scream elite. For one almost every run I saw the hole was large – medium, two his bounce outside wasn’t a hard jump cut, but a soft S. His leaps were pedestrian and that equates to explosion. The only modern great back was Lynch with 35 vet. Leaps aren’t something you can train for the combine it does correlate to physical tools. Given holes he will do fine in the NFL – but elite…again, as my wife tells me, I am far from all knowing. And as far as run game in Miami goes, yup we gave up too early and more importantly the inside runs were trash. Those 0-2 holes are the most important runs in the NFL in my opinion. They are where 3rd and 4th and shorts are won, where clock killings and defense killing is done. As an example look how badly Miami D was taken down with inside running. New and talented guards (Pouncy unfortunately sucks in down and dirty work) will help with that and change the culture of Miami O.

Elliot has the credential to impact the Dolphins offense and we are peace mealing each season. Why draft A back in the 7th round when you can get the Best. The Dolphins offense is Dead last.

My selection would be Taking Elliot @ 8th pick. Expert on NFL show states Elliot is the only player in the 1st round to check all the blocks and some look for him to go by pick 5.

Elliott’s 214-yard effort against Michigan this past Saturday moved him into second-place on Ohio State’s all-time rushing charts – between Heisman Trophy winners Archie Griffin and Eddie George – and tied him with George for the most 200-yard games in school history: five. – Ohio State Football

12/06/2015 – 2015 ALL-BIG TEN FIRST TEAM (COACHES & MEDIA): RB Ezekiel Elliott (Unanimous), Ohio State…Elliott, Ohio State’s Heisman Trophy candidate

12/02/2015 – 2015 BIG TEN GRAHAM-GEORGE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: between Heisman Trophy winners Archie Griffin and Eddie George – and tied him with George for the most 200-yard games in school history: five. – Ohio State Football

12/02/2015 – 2015 BIG TEN AMECHE-DAYNE RUNNING BACK OF THE YEAR:

11/30/2015 – 2015 WALTER CAMP PLAYER OF THE YEAR SEMIFINALIST:

    Hello Dolfans

These players are listed 7th threw 11th pick. Who would you select with the 8th pick or would you prefer to trade out if so! for who? and gaining more picks which is the answer to gaining the proper players.

*Ronnie Stanley OT 2 Notre Dame
    DeForest Buckner DE 2 Oregon
    *A’Shawn Robinson DT 1 Alabama
Carson Wentz QB 2 North Dakota State
    *Mackensie Alexander CB 1 Clemson

    • Dunner

I’m trading out and targeting OSU OLBer Lee if Jack or Bosa are not available at 8. For me, we need a every down LBer, and not a mike backer.

      • Steve

We differ on which side of ball need addressing 1st but with the goal of winning. Miami would need to trade out back to about mid 1st round for Lee.

IN OUR VIEW: Lee is a fantastic athlete with long arms and aggressive hands, but needs to develop his functional strength to consistently stack and shed at the line of scrimmage and keep himself clean. Although he is still young in linebacker years, he is a high character competitor, playing with sky-high confidence and natural football instincts to pick things up quickly. In the mold of Ryan Shazier or Kwon Alexander, Lee is a versatile run-and-hit linebacker with an attacking mind-set that fits today’s NFL.

COMPARES TO: Kwon Alexander, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Their size and take-on skills aren’t strengths, but Lee compares to Alexander as rangy run-and-hit defenders who can excel in today’s NFL.

        –Dane Brugler (2/13/16)

But will he be ready the 1st game of the season???

        • Dunner

Nice bio Steve. Thank You. From everything I’ve read, he should be a day 1 starter. I do agree, I don’ think we take Lee at 8, but if we can target him in the mid to late teens and pick up a extra pick or two, would be the idea scenario.

          • Dunner

Per Mike Mayock: “Given Jaylon Smith’s injury situation, I’ll take Lee as my third safe pick. Already one of the best all-around linebackers in the country, Lee moves well in space, can take on and shed blocks, and regularly chases down plays — and the redshirt sophomore should only get better. Lee can play in a stack outside or inside, but could potentially move to the edge if his new team decides to use him there”.

Couple him up w Scooby Wright (in the 3rd round), and we have ourselves a nice LBer unit for a decade.

  • Dunner

Board last night, so I went through the consensus top 200 2016 draftees big board and simulated Miami’s current draft positions (If there weren’t a position of need at Miami’s draft slot, I slid down no more than 6 spots to pick the best available player):

1st (8th overall): Darron Lee, OLBer, Ohio St

*Was between Lee, Buckner and Hargreaves. The actual spot was Stanely, but I don’t see us taking a tackle at 8. I went back and forth between CB and LBer. In the end I feel we need a young athletic LBer that can cover and Lee is the second rated LBer in the draft.

2nd (42nd): Vadal Alexander, OG, LSU

He was right there at #42 overall and it is a position of need,,, Duh! Second ranked guard and should be a day 1 starter.

3rd (73): Artie Burns, CB, Miami

Burns was right there, and he is home grown, both high school and college in Miami. Good value here, according to scouts Burns has it all, but may take a year or two to develop.

4th (104): Scooby Wright III, ILBer, Arizona

I had to slide down 8 slots to get him, but made the exception, he seems to be everyone’s favorite because of the Zach Thomas comparisons. I REALLY wanted to take RB Prosise of N.D. (to me he is going to be the RB steal of the draft). Hopefully we can get an extra 3rd or forth round pick to enable such move(s).

5th (135): James Cowser, DE, Southern Utah

He was 2 slots below 135, but it is a position of need and he was an ultra productive player, competition was a concern, can it translate to the top level.

6th (168): Matt Ioannidis, DT, Temple

Was between Ioannidis, DT or Graham Glascow, OG, Mich., need to take a DT every draft and w this draft being so deep at the DT position, maybe a steal right here.

7th (195): Avery Young, OT, Auburn

He was right where Miami’s first 7th round pick is. Avery is projected to move inside where we need most.

7th (199): Wendall Smallwood, RB, West Virginia

A playmaker that hopefully Miami can use as a kick returner as well as a punt returner. He is a home-run threat w the ball.

This simulated draft was done from a big board that was based off of players prior to combine. Obviously needs change once free agency takes place. Just a little fun when your as board as I was on a Sunday night.

    • admin

Nice job!!! Wish I had that much draft knowledge!!! Jimmy has a Scooby article so I like the scooby pick!! I’m going to look over those players to see if you’re Nostradamus.

  • Dunner

Marino made the playoffs 10 out of 17 years while only having a 1000 yd rusher one year. Must have been the thinking of the Philbin era.

  • Steve

    Admin

We have run threw wide receiver over the Reigh of Tanny Hill yet to see a playoff. This team will not draft a QB! Truthfully This team needs a running back to carry them. About 30 QB’s since Marino. Miami no run no play offs check the stats!

If We pass on Ezekel Elliot we need to take an offensive linemen in the 1st or 2nd round. In the Pass draft (Non of our linemen after the 2nd round have been reliable. If so who are they last 5 years?

Passing on OT in the 1st round would leave us with these options:

OG 37 Cody Whitehair 1st want be on the board///
    OT 42 Jason Springgs 6th
OG 49th Vadal Alexander 2nd best Guard
OT 51st German Ifedi 7th best tackle
    OT 62nd Le’Raven Clark 8th best tackle

I would not go below the listed above for a potential starting linemen. How many times do we get burned?

I truely want the best defense. We broke the bank on Suh last season and barely won 6 games. Ezekel Elliot will be another Lynch but Faster.

I recall when Bill Parcel’s was coaching the Cowboys thankgiving day playing the Dolphins with Ricky Williams. He told his team we have not played a running team like the Miami Dolphins with a ricky williams in the back field.

    • Dunner

Wow, we better score a bunch because our defense wouldn’t be improved!!!

    • admin

I see this season is all about T-Hill’s eval and a functioning O is essential and probably the essence of this offseason. Now I am not saying screw the D or they won’t add to it. But, it has so many holes that no matter what they do there will be holes. So I see them spending large assets on O and many assets on D. They must have a 3 down RB and a stud LG…as well as a second tier of OL. Matthews signing and miller signing would allow them to add to the line – I am hoping Gase was blowing smoke on the line was in house, although I do think Dallas has a fair chance at RG. Spending big money on the O with a guard Osemele, Rb Miller and wr Matthews would give them total freedom in the draft and allow them to put young D players in and cut their teeth on Gase’s freebie year. I’m sure none of this will happen, but that’s my keyboard vision.

      • Steve

        Jimmy

I understand your point of view. As A fan I am not sold on any of the players. I Saw too many mis tackles, drop passes, missed blocked, false starts, over & under thrown passes, etc. I would not waste to much time restructuring in Wake’s case its essential we have some veteran leadership on the defense.

    • admin

If Ricky was in the draft – minus personal issues Steve- I’d say get ’em! But, I just don’t see Ezekiel as that kind of player. I see him as good, but not elite. Again, I’m still watching his “tape” and looking into him, but so far I’m not sold to say he’d be a huge upgrade over a healthy Ajayi and Miller running behind a good line. If Miami had more pieces, maybe I’d be more inclined, but that 1st is such a big piece and can offer a better chance to get that T, CB, DE or LB where the chances diminish in later rounds. The oline to me is quintessential followed by QB and the DL as the most important squads. RB’s are my favorite position and still are the deciding piece when all other pieces are in play, but look at the Vikes – Peterson is the most dominant back in along time and come playoffs he is shutdown when all other pieces arent in play. Put him on a complete team and they would be unstoppable!!

  • Steve

Better we keep Wake for now!

    • admin

If he doesn’t want to budge enough on the contract it might be a one year deal and you’d have to let him go next year…in that case if he isn’t in a 2-3 yr plan , it might be best to part ways, sadly. But, I want him to stay soo bad…

  • Phinfreak

This doesn’t bother me one bit. Wake will be regulated to a situational player anyways and has been battling injuries last few years.

Fins need to build via draft not high priced aged FA’s w history of season ending injuries.

A logical FA pick would be an OLman or even MLB. Finding starting caliber LBers and CB’s should be the focus via draft.

    • admin

Freak agree on the FA and I’m starting to be swayed on Wake as well. Only linemen though I really like is Whitehair with a late 1st early 2nd! I also agree that CB, LB (pass rushing and premier talent), LT and DE are alot easier found with that 1st or early 2nd rounder. And the idea of trading down into the middle 1st seems a better idea every day.

  • Lemmus

…we don’t have a clue as to whether this report is accurate nor do we know, assuming it is, which side’s offer is the problem …nor do we know what the team’s assessment of Wake’s current health and ability is after his season ending injury …time enough to worry when its confirmed

…of real concern is Gase’s statement at the combine that he thinks the answers to the OL problems are already in house …here’s hoping that he was deliberately blowing smoke to conceal FA and draft priorities, otherwise …good god gerty!

    • admin

Totally agree Lemmus. Saw the report last night and grabbed my barf bag as I put out the article, but this morning I am not seeing any follow ups or other reports. So we can’t tell what the deal is or is not. Also, I did have my barf bag in hand again at Gase’s statement that the line was in house – that gave me the willies. Now, I hope it’s all smoke and mirrors with that…please tell me it is Lemmus!! Please! As Far as Matthews, they might actually be on the verge of losing Wake, Vernon and Miller. If that’s the case then Shelby and Matthews is on deck…they probably want to keep some FA and both aren’t wallet breakers. Matthews might be kept and Stills could be moved. PArker, Landry and MAtthews could be the 3.

      • Lemmus

…Stills cap hit is 1.6 mil for ’16 because he exceeded all of his contract performance bonus measurables in ’15

…there is, imnsho, no way that Matthews will sign for that amount …the consensus is that he will be the #1 FA WR and command at least $4mil …which we appear to agree that he has earned

…we have Landry, Parker, and Stills all on the cheap in a very tough cap year …all young and all healthy …no way that we pay a 4th receiver $4 mil …even one we developed …sorry but that’s just the way it is

…personally I’d like to retain him if only to keep him away from the Patriots whose blogs are going nuts at the prospect …but not at the cost of losing Vernon or not being able to go after Osemele

…we’ll see what happens of course but I’m not at all convinced that the fins will restructure Suh’s contract even if he were to consent …its simply bad business …thus we won’t have the money to retain Matthews and still be able to get a decent FA at a position of need …yes it sux but that’s the way FA works

        • Dunner

Miami does not need Suh’s consent for restructure. Miami had a clause in Suh’s contract that enabled Miami to restructure once without Suh and/or his agent’s permission. Good job Dawn A. So it is totally up to the Fins front office. Stay tuned. Part of me wants to eat the cap figure this year and be in great position in ’17 and beyond. But, if restructure allows us to get a starting Guard and CB,,,,,, restructure.

        • admin

Lemmus, think of it this way: Jennings is 4mill – cutting him would compensate for Matthews who looks like a 4-6 mill a year player with 5-8 guaranteed. Thing with Matthews is by signing him you locked up a squad for 2 yrs. It’s done aside from adding a developmental player or two. Parker while a 1st rd pick and displaying talent is not Gase’s pick and he isn’t as committed. Gase needs two dependable WR. Still seems to be a role player with potential, and Parker seems a starter with star ability, but those are risky words for Gase because if Landry were to go down, only Matthews could fill that #1 spot. I think if Vernon comes off the table then Matthews as a manageable and not cap killing contract is very tasty. I see this regime eliminating slowly all players from the last regime that is anything worse than slightly over priced for production. Matthews would be an investment that would be at worst slightly overpriced. Still’s contract ends this season and I suppose it’s balanced by Landry’s new contract in 2017 -2018 – which will end up being big, and Parker’s new contract qhich would come 2018-2019. But, in a Matthews style deal, unless some crazy overbid happens, his contract could likely be ended with a reasonably hit if needed in 2yrs. Last, FA is now entering a totally new era as the cap will be rising dramatically every year. So, FA and the prohibitive nature of it won’t be a killer as it was in the past. I’m not saying it will go up 11 mill every year, but it will be a substantial amount as the money that used to be given to players in the draft is now moving to the vets. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.

  • ralph

I am sure we wuill be cutting more players and restructuring other contracts – we will have lots more than 20 Million
I don’t think we will be able to re-sign Vernon though
I read that the price would be around 15 Million – so we either sign him and trade him to the Giants or we let him walk – we cannot afford to pay him that much.
we are going to have to draft a Defensive end pretty early in the draft probably in rounds one through three
So if we are not able to sign him and trade him and pick up maybe a second or third rounder for him then we should probably trade back and pick up an extra draft pick
if we are able to get 4 draft picks in the first 3 rounds we should be able to find at least 3 immediate starters from those 4
hopefully although in no specific order a LB, a CB an Offensive line player and a Defensive end (or Safety ?)
Wouldn’t it be great if we pull a Hickey and move back twice and still get studs for our team while picking up 2 extra picks.

Of course a lot of it depends, on what free agents we bring in,
we will know soon who our F.O. has targeted/selected and who they will be successful in signing
I hope we at least get one Guard in free agency and another one in the draft – The guards we have now are not starter material specially Dallas Thomas
I see us getting at least 4 free agents this year and I hope at least 3 are good enough to be starters.
Also why are we waiting to cut some more players does it help our CAP to wait?? for example Jennings – There is no way he comes back at that salary so why are we waiting.
Of the free agents we have in our team I think Rashard Mathews is the one we should sign – he has great chemistry with Tanny. We can get a RB in the 4th or 5th round at one tenth the cost of Miller – we probably cannot afford to keep Vernon not at 15 Million per year
So I guess this next week we will see what the FO does since we can sign free agents starting the 8th of March
Whatever we do, I hope we get 2 new Guards this off season between free agents and Draft.

    • Lemmus

…Ralph …Matthews had a good season …but we’re loaded at WR and he’s no better than 4th in our current rotation …plus the certainty that we won’t get any hometown discount from him …I just can’t see them using much of our scarce cap money to sign him …not unless we can sign and trade for a pro at one of our urgent need positions …either way I’ll be surprised if he’s on our opening day roster

…otoh, I don’t trust Tannenbaum to do anything right so who knows

    • admin

Yeah Ralph the picture of competence and incompetence will get much clearer real soon! I agree with Lemmus and you that the line needs an infusion, especially in the middle. I try to stay upbeat and positive, but if they think our line is “in house” I will go nuclear!!! I am hoping, praying, and begging that they aren’t complete jackass’!!!

      • Steve

        PhinFreak

You said it earlier FA will dictate how we should draft. I feel with a solid line that our current passing game will be mediocre??? Thats why you cannot over look the conversation of Drafting Elliot.

Here is a statement taken from CBS Sports:
Elliott was able to generate monster stats during the 2015 season despite being the focus of nearly every opponent due to the struggles of the Buckeyes’ passing game.

We need this Guy in our back field. Who in the 1st round has a review like that seriouly FinFans????? This is true value, I predict he will go to the Cowboys or the Giant.

Each player in the 1st round has had questioned LB, DE, OT, DC, even the top QB’s. We fans are not doing our home work on Elliot. Five Buckeye’s in the 1st round and he is listed to get drafted before linemen, linebacker and cornerbacks. The DE Joey Bosa will go before him.

    • Steve

      Ralp

      I am with you Brother!

If we draft a running back in the 4th or 5th round we are looking mediocre again. 4th round we are going from 1st rounder Ezekeil Elliot at 12th best player to start of 4th round @130th Kelvin Taylor who is rated the 11th best running back???? We need a Pro Bowl Back to carry the Dolphins offense. It appears that they will have Tanny Hill cause more people to get fired this season with there 1,2,3 on the bench?

    • admin

Ralph, only caveat is we could get that back wayyyy cheaper – could. Gase seems to be a back O cord. – thank GOD!!So it might be essential that he has a real quality back for certain in order to get his O to function…sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t..if these guys have super swag and talent and grab a back late and he is awesome like they did with miller !!! My Fins would stand straight up!! But, is the risk reward ratio worth it?
