Two other protection options for the Phins in the first round

There is no mystery that the Dolphins have a few positions that are high priority needs, however, the mystery lies in who they will finally end up selecting. The Phins only have 6 picks in this upcoming draft, and frankly, that is not enough. Hickey and Tannenbaum, need to work their magic and turn these 6 picks into 2 to 4 starters. The best way for them to achieve that goal is to increase their odds of finding starters, and the best way to do that in a deep draft is to acquire more picks. Hickey displayed a penchant for making trades in last year’s draft and followed that up this off-season with two-player trades. With that being said I strongly believe that Hickey and Tannenbaum are going to be very active on the phones come draft day, and they will be trading back at some point, in order to acquire more picks.

If the Dolphins are dead set on using their first-round pick to solidify the offensive line, then it may be advantageous to trade back into the ’20s and pick up another draft selection in the process. There are two highly ranked Offensive Tackles that are projected to come off the board later in the first round, that may also be a perfect addition to help sure up the line. Those two players are Andrus Peat and D.J Humphries.

Andrus Peat is from Stanford and is the bigger of the two players at 6’7”, 313 pounds. He has tremendous size and length and is a well-rounded blocker in both the running and passing game. The only knock on Peat is that he bends at the waist more than bending at the knees, which something that is most likely coming from his humungous height, but also something that can be corrected by the proper coaching.

D.J. Humphries played at Florida, and is a couple of inches and pounds smaller than Peat, at 6’5”, 307 pounds. Humphries is definitely the quicker and more athletic of the two, however, he is not the stronger of the two, and many of the best pay per head reviews experts believe that he needs to add more strength to be able to better perform at the next level. Humphries is also a well-rounded blocker in both the running and passing game as well. He did miss two games last season due to injury, so that will be a small factor in regards to his draft position. One other side note is that Miami has already shown some open interest in Humphries.

Of the two players, I would prefer the bigger and more powerful Peats, but I believe both players will be able to be day one starters, and both players can play one of the Guard positions. However, I would not draft either of these players as the number 14 overall pick in the draft. The only way I would draft them in the first round is if we traded back, which is a strong possibility. Which of these two players do the Miami Dolphins News fans prefer to draft?

  • I’d be inclined to lean towards Humphries for the simple reason that he is a Florida Gator. These two guys are so similar, why not take the Florida guy? We didn’t have very good luck the last time we took an OT from Stanford. I know that was a different regime but Coach Philbin was in on that pick.
