Top Linebackers Have A Good Shot Of Falling To Fins Pick

Davis could be a good pick, if he can stay healthy

Davis could be a good pick at MLB or SLB

Few picks are guaranteed winners, but some are more likely to hit than others

The 2017 NFL Draft is now officially two weeks away. But unfortunately, we are not getting any closer to knowing what Miami is going to do in the first round. What we do know is that Miami should have the opportunity to select a very good football player with day-one starter capability.

Considering that Miami has multiple positions that they still need to find starting help at, they should have a couple of options at #22 to hit pay dirt.

There are multiple players that are getting linked to the Dolphins number 22nd overall pick. Two of those are Linebackers Jarrad Davis from Florida (who Miami just requested to have come in for a visit to meet with team officials), and Haason Reddick from Temple. Both are expected to go day one or very early day two… which means Miami has a realistic chance at drafting either of them.

Davis had his senior year cut short do to an ankle injury that also caused him to miss the combine. However, he was able to participate in Florida’s Pro Day and he put in a terrific performance and ran a 4.56 40 yard dash and had a 38.5 inch vertical. Not only is Davis a very good player with above average football instincts, but he is also a top character guy that has demonstrated tremendous leadership characteristics, which the Dolphins could always use more of these types of players.

The one knock on him is that he sometimes takes bad angles when going downhill and can be inconsistent with taking on blocks. Davis does have the skills to come in and start at the linebacker position on day one, and most NFL football fans and the best pay per head review sites believe he could eventually move from SLB to MLB in time.

I wouldn’t complain about either pick, but Davis has grown on me a lot

Many scouts think Reddick will get picked in the teens of the 1st round, but other see him dropping to the Dolphins. Reddick had a productive 2016 season at Temple totaling 65 tackles, with 22.5 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 3 passes broken up. However, the knock on Reddick is his size that will force him to convert position–he is a bit small at 6’1” and 237 pounds. Due to this, many scouts feel he is not suited to be an every down edge rusher and would be better off moving to outside linebacker in the NFL.

Projection always puts the question mark over a players future. Reddick, if moved to outside Linebacker, would come with the risk of a significant learning curve. But in the same token, this could help him fall to Miami.

From my perspective, I would be slightly more comfortable selecting Davis over Reddick. Instincts, leadership, and experience verse stiffer competition brings more certainty over a projection of talent. To be fair though, if Reddick makes the transition, he could end up being the higher impact player. But at this stage of the team’s development, can Miami risk that gamble? This is a hard one for me to make my mind up. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about selecting either Davis or Reddick in the upcoming Draft?

  • Larry Czonka Fullback was MVP 1973 Supper Bowl, maybe history could repeat it self with the Dolphins? We have not discussed drafting a Fullback as undrafted Free Agent I know that most fans will say fullback is an obsolete position? I would say not so. A team cannot run will lose the Supper Bowl every time.

Freddie Stevenson FSU Fullback 6th to 7th round maybe undrafted free agent

Reddick, if moved to outside Linebacker, would come with the risk of a significant learning curve. That’s a Red Flag! We need the players who Fit the Dolphins system ready to play for a 1st rounder what ever the position.

Totally agree. He could amount to a big impact player… or end up a player who thinks too much and can never let his instincts work in the scheme and play call. I Like Davis, if they go LB that high.
