Tight End Issues for the Phins

The last off-season it appeared that the Dolphins had finally solved their tight end issue by signing former New York Jets TE Dustin Keller. In training camp, he quickly developed strong chemistry with Ryan Tannehill and was poised for a big season, however in the first preseason game Keller suffered a devastating knee injury that sidelined him for the entire season. Sports gambling fans were quickly betting against any other tight end on the team to fill in, and produce at Keller’s level. However, Charles Clay, who was entering his third NFL season, stepped up and made Phins fans quickly forget about the loss of Keller.

Clay had a breakout season hauling in 69 catches, for 759 yards, and 6 touchdowns, which was triple his production in each of his first two seasons. Not only were his stats very respectable compared to his other tight end peers in the league, but he also provided quite a few big-time plays, in which he refused to be tackled, extending plays for key first downs and touchdowns. His effort and play last season did not go UN-noticed by the rest of his peers, who voted him as one of the NFL’s top playmakers.

Most football betting software fans believed the Dolphins had finally found their long-awaited playmaking tight end, and this upcoming season was going to solidify Clay as one of the upper echelon TE’s in the NFL. However, with less than a month until the regular season begins, it appears that the Dolphins might be in need of another TE stepping up because Clay is having knee issues. Two weeks ago when Clay injured his knee, it did not appear to be anything serious. However, after two weeks of Clay not being able to run in training camp, it is beginning to look like his injury might be a lot more serious than first assumed. The other day he was seen at practice with a knee brace, which is something new in his two-week recovery. Hopefully, the trainers and the coaching staff are just keeping the baby gloves on, and are making sure they do not push Clay too hard to prevent any aggravation in his recovery. However, if Clay’s injury is a lot more serious than previously thought, then the Dolphins need to have someone else on the team step up and claim ownership of the starting TE position.

At the moment it is a three pony race, with Dion Sims having a slight lead over Michael Egnew and Arthur Lynch. Egnew is entering his make or breaks the third season, and personally, this pup has not shown any bite in his first two seasons, so it is hard to imagine the light bulb going off for him now. Lynch is a wet behind the ears rookie, so even though he may have a productive NFL career, expectations this season are not going to be that high. Sims is entering his second season, and at the moment he has been productive in camp and has even begun to develop some chemistry with Tannehill in the red-zone.

Phins fans are praying that Clay will be ready to start the season and continue his rise as one of the top pass-catching TE’s in the league, however, the Phins need to have a contingency plan if Clay is not fit to play. Maybe the Phins get lucky and Clay becomes healthy and Sims breaks out this season as well, giving them a two-headed TE attack, or maybe Clay is seriously injured and Sims steps up as his replacement, or maybe Clay is seriously injured and Sims and the rest of the TE’s on the roster prove they are not capable of being NFL caliber pass-catching TEs?

Clay in a knee brace is very bad news. This means his injury requires immobilization which points a ligament vs cartilage injury. This will now put his timeline out to a 4-8 week healing/recovery/rehab/return cycle.

The lack of depth at TE will loom large now for Philbin.

it could still be cartilage actually. He like many athletes before him push themselves too much sometimes coming back from injures. Till you tear or sprain something you dont know those motions cause pain and it doesn’t trigger in your brain right away.

But yeah, i still dont think this is good news. Your right in a sense that a brace doesn’t tend to come out weeks after the injury but instantly.

Yeah this is a concern that the team seems to want to keep close to the vest. The problem is time is running out and we do not have anyone on the team that is at Clay’s level
