Thankfully Dolphins Not Going To Be Big Spenders

Being big spenders didn’t always mean big returns

The other day the Miami Dolphins front office announced that they weren’t going to be big spenders in free agency this year.

Over the last few years, the Dolphins been “winners of the off-season” as biggest spenders, annually landing some of the most expensive free agents on the market. However, that strategy didn’t make them a better team by winning more games.

Last off-season, the Dolphins brass showed a lot more fiscal responsibility by not over paying for their in-house free agents and didn’t give away huge amounts of money to other team’s free agents. Real Bookies bet that the Dolphins are most likely going to take a similar approach this off-season.

However, the one difference this off-season is that the Dolphins currently have over $40 million in cap space to work with and some very specific needs like, LB, DE, G, and Safety to fill.

Spending big and winning doesn’t go hand-in-hand

The fact is that Miami must get quality starters at these positions, and doing bottom of the barrel, basement shopping is going to make for a very tough road to fill all of these positions. Miami would be wise to at least make a single big signing in one of the above positions, because they have the money and need the help. Then they can focus on signing free agents that are at a lower price range, but have potential to be starters or big time depth players.

Miami may also decide to use some of that $40 million in cap space to restructure contracts like Jones, Landry, and Alonso, or even resign players such as Stills, Branch and Thomas. Alsom don’t forget that Miami has no qualms about making trades, which they already did last year and this year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they had another trade up their sleeves.

Regardless of what Miami does, you can bet that they are going to take a fiscal and calculated approach to free agency. They will again set their own market price for players and not get into a bidding war if a player wants more. Go Fins!!!
