The Sad State Of Former Fins WR Davone Bess

Devon Bess is suffering from apparent Mental Health problems.

Davone Bess was all heart and grit on the grid iron.

Remember how Wide-Out Davone Bess was such a gem-of-a-find in the post-draft FA pool?

Bess helped ease the lose of Wes Welker  (who was picked up by the Patriots in the bitter “poisoned pill” contract) as that special teams / slot receiver.

Davone Bess had some magic. He finished his first regular season third among NFL rookies in receptions (54) behind two second-rounders—Denver’s Eddie Royal and Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson. His 54 season receptions is the second most in NFL history for an undrafted rookie (behind only Wayne Chrebet, who had 66 catches in 1995). Not even the best at sports gambling would have predicted that!

Davone’s last season was 2012. He went to Cleveland the next year, and the year after that he was out of football.

But, it was his last year in the NFL that things, at least to the public, became strange and his life took a nosedive into the what seemingly appears as mental health issues.

Devon Bess mental health challenges have come to a head.

“Bess was arrested in Florida on January 17, 2014, on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer at Fort Lauderdale airport. Broward Sheriff’s Office records show Davon’s was arrested, after acting erratically and confronting an officer. The arrest comes one day after he posted a photo on his Twitter page of a small package containing what appeared to be marijuana. The photo was later deleted. Following the arrest, on January 18, Bess posted yet another photo on Twitter this time of himself nude standing in front of a mirror, this photo was also later deleted adding to the list of bizarre behavior in this short time frame.”

His latest episode cam to a head today, “I Arizona, Davone was arrested by the Gilbert Police Department for three felony charges of endangerment, felony flight and failure to stop for a police officer. The arrest followed a traffic stop which Bess fled from and then subsequently barricaded himself inside his house.”

I always liked Bess and rooted for him heavily  to do well. I never understood why they let him go. The reason for his departure is clearer now. I for one am rooting hard for this former member of the Dolphin family. I hope he shows the same grit and heart he demonstrated on the football field in his efforts to get himself the help he needs to right the ship. Go Fins!!!
