Run Game And “D” Brings Win

Ravens were a battered team and a dim reflection of their Super Bowl roster, but with their last 12 contests coming down to a score or less, they are no slouches either –  and today was no difference. Miami came out with a game plan and stuck with it. The entire team and coaching staff seemed calmer and more poised than they had in several games. With Baltimore boasting a top 10 run defense, it was thought Miami would work the pass to find victory. Instead, the Dolphins ran at the teeth of the beast and broke them off. They handed the ball off on the first play and never stopped feeding Miller the rock. The running game and its success was the foundation on which this victory was laid.

As for passing, Tannehill had a “statistically poor” game throwing for under 50%, but he made two huge throws, a play action for a TD and a 3rd and long at the end for a first down, that went a long way towards the victory. But, it was one stat that has a zero in the column which was his biggest contribution – zero turnovers and zero boneheaded plays. Tannehill played smart and within the context of the game. He demonstrated that play action and a mobile platform are very useful tools for him. There were two missed passes that he’d of like to have back, but overall his performance was what was needed, and he delivered.

Defense generated big play after big play. Warts and all, they were stout inside and brought tremendous pressure which generated turnovers and crucial stops. The defense seemed to feed on the run game (and the shortened game it provided) and was the deciding factor in the contest. Enough can’t be said about Suh, Vernon, Jones and the continuing rise of Phillips. Also, the secondary had several nice deflections and did their part on a soggy field.

With the departure of Lazor, Campbell was “allowed” to get his vision portrayed on the field for for the first time in 5 weeks. It paid off and seems that the Dolphins relish and thrive under a run heavy, defense driven game plan. Now, it’s not to say under this format they are contenders for the crown, not even the best sportsbook software providers in the world would take that bet, but both offense and defense seem more stable and poised when the backbone is rushing. This was merely the first battery of tests to see if Lazor and his influence was a governor on the engine of this team. Next week against the Giants Miami will have a more complete team with which to be tested against. Go Fins!!!

This is good stuff! Nice conversation about our Dolphins.

Ravens limped onto the field…and still could have pulled it out. Defense had their moments but the holes are glaring on the backend and at LB. If it wasnt for pass rush and Schaub at QB, it would have been a very different game.

Tannehill was awful. He is what he is, the second coming of Chad Henne. He can only make a few NFL throws, and he is definitely not a QB between the ears. He’s an athlete playing QB. The project has failed folks.

Draft a QB in the mid rounds.

      Phinfreak!

I did not see that game but saw the highlights. Next opponent are the giant at 5 and 7 all so?

    • Dunner

Freak, The Ravens limped on the field offensively, but defensively they are still stout and rank near the top. That is no excuse for the QB play though, I agree w you that he is a athlete playing QB. Taanehill is not the answer, we need to find a way to move on while adding 2/3 new LBing core. Oh yea, and a corner. Couple guards would be nice as well.

    • Dunner

If we are going to draft a QB Freak, it needs to be 1 of the top 3 or not at all. As Bad as Tanny is, he is better than any mid round QB in next years draft, but not better than either of the top 3.

    Hey Ralph,
Couldn’t Channel 27 in Orlando ( CBS ) carry the Dolphins games if somehow common sense and marketing savvy were applied ? I mean the station that carried the pre-season games in 2014. And couldn’t the NFL guru’s find a way to schedule the Dolphin and Jaguar games in a non-competitive way in terms of times and dates ? Sure they could. I know anecdotally that there are more Dolphin fans in the I-4 corridor than there are Jaguar fans. You would think that the Ross brain-trust would be hard at work on this as they need all the fans they can get. I’m not holding my breathe until the Dolphins have a play off worthy team, but I think we are only a few pieces away from being a contender. Forgive the smirk…..2018 sounds about right. I’m pretty sure the brain-trust wants a big-name coach for next year but that is no guarantee things will go our way. Oh’ well !! Go Dolphins !!

Finsanity, Did we win??? That needs to be the game plan when you have a QB such as Tannahill. Don’t under estimate the Ravens, sure their offense was crippled, but their defense is still top notch.

Coincidence that Miller gets his first 20 carry game of his career and it equals 100+ yards and a WIN? Wow, wasn’t to hard to figure that out Lazor, Philbin.

Tannehill left a few scores on the field (no surprise there). Again, seriously must consider moving on following this season! We can’t keep saying he has to get better, he’s had every opportunity, he’s put enough work on tape and it is what it is, sorry.

How about the rookies making plays yesterday:

We may have found a corner opposite Grimes in McCain. Bobby McCain is a clone of Grimes, gotta like his intensity, wasn’t perfect, but he competed enough to make a difference. How about Parker, he went up and high pointed the ball on his touchdown. Route running needs work, however; when he gets the ball or he is involved in a jump ball, you can see why there was so much buzz about him in the OTA’s. And finally how about Jordan Phillips getting his first start of the season and holding his own? Nice to see this staff to give the rookies an opportunity (something the previous staff never did for one reason or another). Should be 3 solid starters heading into next year.

The defense played a good all around game, bending but not breaking. This side of the ball is a few LBers and a corner away from being a very, very good unit. When you have the BEST defensive lineman and safety in the game, adding pieces around them will only improve the entire unit.

OV is making a strong case for his next contract, I just wish he would fizzle towards the end of the season to enable Miami to get a home town discount, seems to be the opposite. Happy for him, but Miami needs to start signing their home grown players and he should be one of them.

The GUARD play showed its inefficacy all day long again yesterday. This unit needs to posses the ball for more than 21 minutes and run more than 46 plays. This offense needs 2 new guards and a QB and this unit will also be a very good unit. Miller too, is making a case for a nice contract next year. I hope he accepts a home town discount and stays. Teams are built through the draft and keeping their own is where it starts. However; paying a big contract for RBs doesn’t happen all to often.

I don’t mind the close games, run the ball and play good “D”, it will have better results than 50 passes a game.

This team is frustrating, they lose when I want them to win, and win when I would like to see them lose (which isn’t very often, here on out though).

So, let me get this straight. Miami generated around 200 yards of offense and we are now content with that? Our offense is really a sad thing to watch. 9 punts is absolutely ridiculous if we expect to beat any team above .500. Our QB is quickly losing confidence in himself and support from us fans. Excuses are getting thinner. We all want him to be the man so bad, but my team is more important than that. We fired Sparano because of gameplans that play it safe…ie close games and field goals and now we want to go back to that with Campbell. He has no plan, and will cost us more time if he stays HC. We worked hard to get people to Miami that could put points on the board….not grind out home wins against subpar teams. I don’t want to go back to 2010, and that was us today

Fin’ 200 yrd under the conditions and given the team isn’t terrible when 70 percent is rushing. Look back over Seattle in Wilson’s first year…there were lots of those..now I’m not saying he is Wilson and we are Seattle, but the point is on a run game “d” centric team this would be acceptable…heck remember Big Ben’s first few years. To me Tanny can still be garbage or he could be suffering from a failure to launch. He might just be a mobile game manager who can put a few big plays upa game with arm and legs…and that would be fine in a particular system…and better than we could get. The draft doesn’t seem to have QB star worth a getting crazy over and it’s always a gamble. I’m fine with a very good team being built around a 15-10 QB as we are in no situation to get better. The Giants will refine the view of he is either garbage or product of failed development.

Darn NFL has dictated that all of Central Florida is supposed to be Jacksonville Jaguars territory so they broadcast the Dolphins only when the Jaguars are not playing at the same time
So today I missed watching the game – did not want to go to the overcrowded sports bar in Satellite Beach
    Wish I had gone
I’m a season ticket holder but had given my pass to my partner so he used them with his wife
We usually drive down together but I’ve been so disappointed lately and I guess it’s because of the high expectations we had that our time had finally arrived this year only to find mediocrity again
    I’m glad we won
I hope Campbell gets the job next year
I think the players will play hard for him
I think his philosophy is right run the ball enough and their defense cannot focus solely on our passing game which in turn opens up our passing game
This year is not a total failure at least we got rid of Philbin , Coyle and Lazor
Now if we could get rid of Tannebaum we would be in much better shape to get good quality players for our team
I think we can now beat the Giants plus hopefully Parker will continue to improve and contribute more and more each passing game

  • Lemmus

…the defense was pretty damn good but Schaub gave them the game

…that goal line stand was something to see

…the offense sputtered and punted all day with one exception when the defense gave them the ball in the red zone …the only positive I noted was that the runs kept them on the field a bit longer.

…with the exception on 2 throws, Tannehill was behind or ahead of his receivers all day …that’s on him and his best buddy/new OC needs to fix it

…say all you want about the Ravens but the bottom line is that they were a 4-7 team with a back-up QB with a penchant for interceptions …we beat them by 2 points that they practically gave us.

…cue the Giants next …a 5-7 team with an HC’s head on the chopping block …I’ll take a win any which way …but I think Campbell needs to start delivering more if he wants to stay on as the HC …run or throw …they still failed to convert on 3rd …the new OC didn’t change that.

    • Dunner

Lemmus, that is why Tannehill is not the answer. Struggling O-Line or not, tanny just doesn’t have. Because, when the time is there, hes not!!! Must move on, and I don’t mean starting Moore, I’m talking next year’s draft. We will be starting screw ourselves out of the top 3 QBs, winning a few more games.

      • admin

Dunner and Lemus I don’t disagree with you much guys, but I do 50% on this one in regards to Tannehill. First, Tannehill in my opinion is still up in the air, BUT I liked what I saw yesterday. WHY would you say? First, he isn’t going to be a top 5 QB that is clear, 5-10 seems a stretch at this moment, BUT 10-15 I think given the right frame work and team he could…nonsense you say! Okay, let’s start with this: he managed the game and as you watched with Schuab it’s not easy thing to do, he managed two big throw – that’s it you exclaim, well here are mitigating factors…Landry his primary target was basically decoy due to injury, Parker is still a relational work in progress, first time OC and in my opinion it’s still possible he is developing ( I give it he could also just be limited). Lazor was a 2 yr hindrance, not just because he was a jerk, control freak, limited developmental skills, but because he was like ‘Jimmy Johnson – one size fits all. Tanny if allowed at have a running game will enhance his strengths, roll outs, play action, QB action, screen game, boots and underneath. Last, a ray of light that keeps nagging me is his development in the long game. He had zero last year, this year he has double digits. Again, I’m willing to see how I can be wrong and I thought he was not it a few weeks ago, but I am in the reconsidering phase and this week said something to me. I could be a anomali …this week will make it clearer.

        • Dunner

I tend to agree with you Admin., but I have seen enough that tells me that we may need to go in a another direction to get where we want to be as a team, and that is the playoffs. Tanny’s teammates are going to start and loose confidence in him (sure they respect his effort, but thats not enough) and when that starts to happen it affects every unit on the team. For me Admin, if I could, I would trade Tanny if it enabled us to obtain one the 3 QBs coming in next year (Paxton Lynch, Jared Goff, Connor Cook). Any one of the three could manage a game such as yesterday with as good if not better result than that of Tannehill.

PS: Goff has the same entangles that Marino had coming out, and his strength is a lightning quick release. Just saying (to bad he wouldn’t last till 27).

          • admin

hmm I need to look at the QBs, not a college guy, so I was spewing what I had read about nothing spectacular coming out of the draft. Thanks for the info I’ll look into them.

      • Steve

        Hello Dunner

I respect your opinion! So you would prefer for the Dolphins to give away games in order to draft the best QB? Are you aware that Matt Moore lead the Dolphins to a 6-6 season after he replaced Henning that season?

I would play Matt Moore the remainder of the season. It would be a shame if Matt Moore is the Answer and the Coaching, Management or ‘Fans (Dont know what that have)?

Stephen Ross was told by someone that Tannehill was a Franchise QB who needs to answer for this.
That being said We the Fans have 4 more years of this. The Dolphins will not admit this. (I feel that Kapernick with the 49ers may be in the wrong offense and could be a Steal?, He has lead them to A Super Bowl aganist the Raven. That would have to weigh something?, isnt that the goal the Supper Bowl?

        • Dunner

Steve, I couldn’t agree w you more. If it were me, I would have put Moore in following the Pats game. But this staff, mainly Tannebaum will not let Campbell sit Tanny in favor of Moore. Remeber it was Taanebaum that gave Tannehill a HUGE contract extension when he could have waited another year (ala Seattle = Wilson) and then make your move. Another bad move (QB) by Tannebaum and we will pay for it, at least for another year if we don’t trade him. I never expect players/coaches to loose to improve next years draft position, we have to many good players for that and a head coach trying to prove himself. That thought was hypothetical.
