Rumor: Coughlin-Campbell Coaching Tandem

Tom-Coughlin

The Dolphins are already conducting interviews for their next heading coaching position and they have already interviewed former Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith. In addition, Mike Tannenbaum and Stephen Ross and the rest of the Dolphins coaching search committee is in New York City interviewing Mike Shanahan and Terly Austin. Tannenbaum has promised the fans that there would be a thorough search, so this will just be the beginning of the interviews. One name that is beginning to gather some steam, and would fill the need of finding a coach with experience, is former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.

Coughlin has won two Super Bowls this decade and both have been against the Dolphins AFC nemesis, the New Patriots, which is definitely a plus, since Coughlin is one of the few coaches who has had success against the Patriots in recent years. Coughlin just re-signed after the Giants disappointing 6-10 season, however it was probably more of the Giants organization saying, “do you want to do this the hard way or the easy way”, and instead of getting fired, Coughlin choose to re-sign.

Coughlin definitely has the experience and has a solid resume with Super Bowl victories to back him up, and Miami should at the very least set up an interview with Coughlin. What is even more interesting about possibly hiring Coughlin as the head coach pairing him with interim head coach Dan Campbell who is well respected and like in Miami. Campbell is extremely young and has limited experience being a coach in this league, however, he does check a lot of the right boxes in terms of what an organization is looking for in a head coach. It would be a pity to cast him aside only to see him catch on with another organization and become a successful head coach in this league.

So the rumor is that Miami would be interested to hire Tom Coughlin if he is interested in keeping Dan Campbell as a coach on his staff. If Coughlin were willing to be the head coach, but at the same time mentor Dan Campbell, so Campbell could gain valuable experience from Coughlin. Then in a few years Campbell would take over for Coughlin when he retires, which will be sooner than later since he is nearing 70. This could be a perfect fit for everyone involved. Most football gambling fans would say this may be one of the best solutions for Miami in regards to their head coach since it would give them a proven winner in Tom Coughlin and at the same time allow them to keep a young coach whom they really adore. It would also provide him with the proper time to learn all the ins and outs of being a head coach. If all parties could be sold on this idea, then I would say this would probably be my top choice. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think about this possible coaching tandem for Miami?

How do I write articles for this site? I want to start some ridiculous rumors, too.

Actually, the rumor was from Phinsider…as was stated. It was a rumor and was stated as such which didn’t stem from this site (again Phinsider) that found it’s origin in a Salguero piece that took a life of it’s own. SO, if we started it then you would be correct…but, we didn’t hence the title “RUMOR”. See how it’s possible to have a discourse in a polite manner..and still get a pointed point across…

What makes a HC is his staff and which assistants he brings w him. With Coughlin, you are going to have a first class staff from the top on down. The newbie HC’s do not have the ability to fill their staff like a veteran HC does. Thus, leaving a lot of question marks throughout. Not saying that a newbie HC can not field a successful staff, but the odds are stacked against them opposed to a veteran HC, especially someone such as Coughlin. I would love (no pun intended) Lovie Smith to come along w Coughlin, highly doubt that happening. If it were, and then it didn’t work out, see you later Tannebaum and even Ross himself should consider selling the team, if that tandem couldn’t get it done.

Someone actually has given this scenerio much thought!

This sounds like the classic management cannot stay in their lane manipulating the Head Coach before he is even hired.

This is what I’m talking about the Dolphins are looking for a Yes Man not a Coach! This is a recipe for failure.

This would only work if Coach Coughlin hired Coach Dan Campbell himself. Coach Couglin I do believed “WOULD BE MORE QUAILIED PUTTING HIS COACHES TOGETHER THAN ANYONE IN THE DOLPHINS MANAGEMENT. A true coach will not tolerate This!

Inaddition if you are going to hire Coach Campbell then hire him for the Job without strings also Lovey Smith is on the market from Tampa Bay he was fire.

PS: What would be impressive is if the Dolphins could hire Coach Couglin, Lovey Smith and Dan Campbell? that could really spell Super Bowl for sure!

Yeah, it was a rumor stemming from a Salguero piece that was misrepresented in a Phinsider piece…seems Gase will be the man.

This is a recipe for success–please make it happen!! And for all you dopes that think this is a bad idea go back to the Jets

What a great Idea!!!! Make it so!

  • Van

Great idea but I’ve heard that Coughlin is difficult to work for.

  • phinfreak

Stupidest idea Ive heard all year. Coughlin in a wheel chair with Campbell changing his diapers during timeouts.

Where do the stupid ideas come from?

It actually stemmed from a Salguero piece…BUT you realize that it should be MOST STUPID?! I’ll assume you do. 🙂

Regardless, Coughlin would be my choice first. It is hard to convince a HC to have to keep any of the former staff, especially one that was the interim HC, would said coach(s) undermine the new HC, would there be a divide in the locker room when/if adversity happens?

Coughlin would only come if he had total control of his players/roster, etc. If Ross would not relinquish him that you could forget about it. I would like to believe the Ross would allow for that. But then again, there is a lot of things I thought Ross would do as well, only NOT to happen.

Would really like for Coughlin to be our new HC. I live a 1/2 mile from Tom’s Mother (Upstate NY), and south Florida would be a nice place for her to spend her winters. Every little edge helps, and oh yea Tom, no state taxes.

  • Bradleycsocal

This would be the best idea out of the Dolphins since hiring Jimmy Johnson if both Coughlin and Campbell buy into it and the powers that be can pull it off….

    • admin

Finding out now that it was a Salguero piece and it was an idea…Phinsider then made it out to be a rumor…at least that’s the rumor I’m hearing.

  • Ralph

Sounds good but I personally still think Shula is our best option but as stated by Lenny’s what happens when he clashed with Tannebaum ……

  • Lemmus

    …”Coughlin” would be saddled
…damn, I’m almost as bad an editor as admin 🙂

  • Lemmus

…sweet rumor, great idea …but the thing is, both Coughlin and Campbell would have to buy into it …not sure that’s realistic …Campbell would be saddled with someone he doesn’t know as the designated heir apparent, someone who already has the mgt and player’s ear/respect …that could be a real problem …unless of course, Ross opens his checkbook to make it happen …I like it but not gonna hold my breath waiting for it to happen

…saw one list today ranking all the HC openings on desirability …iirc Miami was 5th out of 7 with the FO and cap given as the major negatives …Tannenbaum’s rep isn’t a secret …imnsho, the good candidates will have a number of better choices than Miami unless Tannenbaum cedes player final say and Ross ups the ante by quite a bit

…don’t think Shula will even be interviewed …team could go very deep in playoffs first …and 2nd, he would be a political/media nightmare for Tannenbaum if they weren’t in lockstep
