Rebuilding the Receiver Group

The Dolphins had the highest-paid group of wide receivers in the entire league last year, but unfortunately, they did not produce like the highest-paid group. There is no denying that the Dolphins have talent at the wide receiver position, but this off-season the Dolphins will be making an overhaul.

You could go to any sportsbook in the world and bet that Hartline and Gibson will be gone. The jury is still out on whether Wallace will be brought back, but it seems unlikely that they will be able to trade him with his bloated contract, and as much as he may be a bit rough around the edges, I don’t think the Dolphins want to lose 10 touchdowns worth of production. The wise thing would be to keep Wallace for one more year and use a deep draft of receivers to rebuild the receiving core around Jarvis Landry.

The Dolphins have a few needs so they may not be able to pull the trigger on one of the upper echelon receivers in this upcoming draft, however, they may also not have much of a choice if one of these playmakers lands in their lap at the number 14^th spot. There are 3 wide receivers that are by far the best 3 in the draft, and then after them, there is everyone else. They are Amari Cooper, DeVante Parker, and Kevin White. Unless Cooper has some type of dramatic set back during the combine, he will be selected in the top 10. However both Parker and White, according to my favorites pay per head reviews, will still be available when the Phins are on the clock.

At first glance I prefer Parker, he has the size at 6’3”, he has quickness, the hands, route-running ability, run after the catch ability; just a complete wide receiver. However, he was banged up in 2013 and in 2014 he missed his first 7 games with a broken left foot. To me that is a major red flag, two-season filled injuries, that screams that he is going to have a hard time staying healthy in the NFL. He has the size and ability to be a dangerous red-zone threat, however, the Dolphins need to strike gold with a guaranteed stud with the 14^th pick, and his health is just too much of a question for me to want to use our first-round selection on an injured player.

Kevin White was one of the more dominant receivers in college football last season with 109 catches for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is also 6’3”, but even faster with a 4.40 40 yard dash time, and he is very good at fighting for catches. He has the look and feels of a Kelvin Benjamin, without as much size. I really like that he has the ability to fight for the ball when it is in the air, something that Wallace does not have.

So if Miami does decide to go wide receiver with the first pick, then the wise move would be to go with White, because he is healthier and better at the contested ball. He would be a terrific addition to the line up with Landry and Wallace. Miami needs to be thinking about the future and replacing Wallace, so drafting a receiver of White’s quality would be a step in the right direction. If Miami does draft White, don’t be surprised if they draft another receiver later on in the draft, since this is a deep draft for wideouts. Even if Miami does not pull the trigger on a wideout in the first round there is a long list of receivers that Miami will have a chance to draft later on such as Jaelen Strong, Sammie Coates, Ty Montgomery, Devin Smith, Dorial Green-Beckham (could be the biggest high risk, high reward player in the entire draft, think Randy Moss when he came into the league), Philip Dorsett, Justin Hardy, and Devin Funchess. Miami needs to select at least one of these receivers, which one does the Miami Dolphins news fans prefer?
