Should the Phins consider Andre Johnson?

football gambling

On Wednesday morning it was released that Andre Johnson’s agent Kennard McGuire has asked the Houston Texans to release his client from his contract. This followed Monday when the Texans gave Johnson and McGuire permission to seek a trade after Johnson was told his role would diminish next season. A trade is highly unlikely considering he has a bloated contract of $11.5 million next year and $12 million in 2016, which is similar to the Mike Wallace situation. However, maybe they could work out a straight up trade with Houston? He is a native of Miami Florida and played for the Hurricanes in college, should Miami consider bringing him home if he is released?

Obviously one negative is that Johnson’s pending contract is very large for a player that has been in the league for 12 years and will be turning 34 years old this summer. Clearly if Miami is interested in signing Johnson it would have to be at a much lower rate, because there is no reason to pay that kind of money for a player who is at the end of his career. In addition Johnson has stated that he would like to play for a team that has a legitimate chance at winning a Super Bowl, and most football gambling fans would not consider Miami a legitimate contender yet. Sadly I could see Johnson taking a pay cut and playing for a team like the Patriots.

However if Miami was interested in signing him he would fill two important roles. He would give this team some much needed veteran presence in the wide receiver position, which would also make it easier for the Dolphins to make the move and get rid of Wallace. The other thing Johnson would do is finally give the Dolphins the big-bodied receiver that they have been missing from their offense. Even though he is at the tail-end of his career, he still produced a productive season last year with 85 catches for 936 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Personally I would probably pass on Johnson, unless he could be had for a very cheap incentive laced contract. There is no questioning his talent, but with his age and also that he does drop his fair share of passes I would be hesitant to sign him. However, it never hurts to kick the tires and see if Miami can get a hometown discount on a reputable wide receiver. What does the rest of Miami Dolphins news fans think about taking at look at Johnson?

Tall, narrow body type with athletic footwork and long-striding speed to pick up yards with his legs. Elite-level arm strength and release quickness with the ability to add velocity and extra RPM’s on his throws with ease. Not shy about testing tight windows and trusts his arm to make frozen rope throws and put the ball anywhere he wants on the field.

Love everything Andre is about, true professional, high character. Need to keep adding young talented players. Hope he wins a championship if Miami doesn’t.

    Johnson yes, Suh no.

Johnson has plenty left and is red zone matchup nightmare.

And Suh doesn’t have much left? I don’t think you understand the impact Suh will have on this entire team.

This is a very deep receiver rich draft
If we sign Suh then LB is not quite as critical as it is without Suh
Therefore receiver and corner would be our 1-2 draft needs
If we sign a veteran corner in free agency then there is no way we sign a receiver in free agency NONE
We will get 2 receivers in the draft
Don’t know what order but I am sure hickey has a good plan for receivers
We have to get rid of Wallace one way or another trade or release him
Also look for releases of wheeler and ellerby whenever it makes the best CAP sense if it’s June 1st then that is when we cut them
Unless Johnson comes for 3 million I don’t think we will sign him

I agree with you Ralph if we can sign Suh that will take some emphasis away from LB, and I would love to get an established veteran CB in free agency. The draft is very deep at WR, so a double down at WR position would be the smart move in the draft and could yield two promising young studs at WR to go along with Landry
