Need a Back up QB

Last year was a big year for Ryan Tannehill and the offense. Tannehill set new career season highs in QB rating, yards, and touchdowns, which are all very important statistics for your starting QB. Coming into the season Tannehill was still one of the biggest questions on the team. He may have not answered every question, but he clearly proved that he could handle, and thrive in a new offense, and more importantly, proved to be more of the solution than the problem.

Tannehill will be the unquestioned starting QB next season, and most free bookie software sites would bet that Miami will exercise their 5th-year option on his contract, and also look to lock him up with a long term deal. Even though the organization’s faith in Tannehill has grown, the Dolphins still need a security blanket ready to fill in if he regresses or gets injured. At the moment Matt Moore is the Dolphins’ backup QB, and he is regarded as one of the NFL’s top backups, and he could definitely start for a number of QB deprived teams. However, for the cash strapped Dolphins he is an unrestricted free agent next season and it will cost Miami $5.5 million if they want to keep him as their backup.

Moore is a stand-up guy who has quietly accepted his role, but with Miami having many other needs on the team to fill if they want to be a playoff-caliber team, it seems highly unlikely that Miami will or should spend this much money on a player that they plan to keep on the bench. Instead, they will most likely let Moore try to test the free-agent market, and try to find a team that he has a legitimate chance of starting for. Assuming that Miami lets Moore walk, then that means Miami will be in the market for a backup QB. Miami can find someone in free agency, however, I believe the wise move would be to draft a QB in the middle rounds and try to groom him. I have said this before but will say it again. Ron Wolf, the former GM of the Green Bay Packers, had a credo that a team should draft a QB every single year. It is arguably the most important position in all of the sports and it is a smart idea to constantly be accumulating young potential QB talent each season.

There are some interesting candidates that will most likely come off the board between the 2nd and 5th rounds, such as Garrett Grayson from Colorado State, Brett Hundley from UCLA, Sean Mannion from Oregon State, Shane Carden from East Carolina, and Bryce Petty. Obviously, all these candidates are going to come with their own set of weaknesses and blemishes, but Hickey, Tannenbaum, and the rest of the scouting department need to thoroughly look at these QB’s and other QB’s entering the draft that they feel have a high ceiling and can be successfully coached up. Which QB’s entering the 2015 draft does the rest of the Phins fans think Miami needs to strongly consider drafting?

Maybe 7th Rounder rest on the bench a few year’s.

6th round 172 Brandon Bridge QB 7 South Alabama

STRENGTHS: Tall, narrow body type with athletic footwork and long-striding speed to pick up yards with his legs. Elite-level arm strength and release quickness with the ability to add velocity and extra RPM’s on his throws with ease. Not shy about testing tight windows and trusts his arm to make frozen rope throws and put the ball anywhere he wants on the field.

if moore wanted to start he would have left last year. A retired Orton was the FA qb prize last year

Matt Moore needs to sign a team friendly contract unless he believes he can go else where and start.

I think the Phins should strongly consider Blake Sims from Alabama. He has a few flaws but is very cerebral and easy to teach. He wouldn’t be a guy that you could trust coming off the bench early in year one, if something happened to Tannehill, (God forbid) but he is a fast learner and could be ready by mid season. The best thing going for us, is the fact that most analyst believe that he will be a late round pick, and some even believe he will go undrafted and become a FA after the draft. That would be a perfect scenario for us, as we wouldn’t have to use a draft pick and could sign him for the league minimum for a UDFA quarterback.
