Miami looking at in-state running back for Draft

NCAA Football: BCS National Championship-Florida State vs Auburn

Even though the Miami Dolphins recently signed Knowshon Moreno to help give some life to the anemic running game, Dennis Hickey and the Dolphins have insisted that they are not finished upgrading and creating competition at that position. As I have stated many times on phins news, Hickey drafted Doug Martin 2 years ago in the first round, and he is looking to find another starting running back in this year’s upcoming draft.

Now that the Dolphins have at least added someone to compete with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas, the running back position is not something that they will be drafting in the first two rounds. However, Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans should not be surprised if the Dolphins take a swing on a runner in the 3rd or 4th rounder. One name that I am told has definitely been on the Phins radar is Florida State running back Devonta Freeman, who is 5’8” weighs 206 pounds and ran a 4.58 40 time. He was the most consistent back for the National Championship Seminoles last season, running for 1,016 yards on 173 carries, which is a high 5.9 yards per carry average, 14 touchdown, and 22 receptions for 278 yards and a 1 touchdown. He is projected as a 3rd to 4th round running back, and a few teams already, including Miami, have expressed interest in him. Miami even recently had him come in for a private workout, The Dolphins like drafting in-state college players, which was evident last year when they drafted 3 Florida Gators.

Two of the biggest things that stand-out about this young man is that he has a nose for the end-zone, which is evident from his 14 touchdowns, and his high yards per carry average. In his 14 games last season, in each game except 1, he was able to break a running play for more then 10 yards. In 8 of the 14 games, which is 57% of the games, he was able to break a running play for more then 20 yards. Also in the receiving game he was able to pull down a catch, and go for more then 20 yards in 4 of the 14 games. These stats prove that this guy has the explosiveness to break a big play in either the running or the passing game, whenever he gets his hands on the ball.

This reminds me of what phins nation was expecting from Lamar Miller this season. Instead in 16 games he had only 4 games were he had a running play that went for more than 20 yards, and only 1 game where he had a pass turning into more than a 20 yard play. Dennis Hickey did not draft Miller, and football gambling fans know how fickle GM’s are about going with their guys, so Phins fans should not be surprised if the Dolphins draft Freeman in the middle rounds as a possible replacement for Miller.
