Let’s have some Fun with Chess

As we have said many times, this upcoming draft is deep and especially deep at the wide receiver position. There are around 10 receivers that have 1st round grades and around a total of 16 that have the potential to start next season for their respective teams. One of these players is Michigan‘s Devin Funchess.

He is one of the more interesting prospects because he is 6’4” 232 pounds, which makes him more like a tight end. He actually played tight end for the Wolverines in his first and second year, and then was moved to wide receiver as a Junior. Last season at the wide receiver position he caught 62 passes for 733 yards and 4 touchdowns but was slowed down during the year with a nagging leg injury. The biggest knock on Funchess is that he does not have elite speed and ran a 40-yard time of 4.70, and there are concerns that as a wide receiver in the NFL he will not be fast enough to get separation.

However there is no reason why Miami can not allow him to start off as a wide receiver and if separation is an issue, then they could just as easily move him to tight end. In his Sophomore season in 2013, he was the Big Ten TE of the year with 49 receptions for 748 yards and 6 touchdowns. The yardage mark was also a Michigan single-season record, so it is clear that this young man has athletic skills.

There is a lot of speculation on Funchess and he is projected by sports betting software gurus likes www.AcePerHead.com to go anywhere as early as the first round or as late as the 4th round. Based on his slow 40 time, and that there are other more pure Wide Receivers in the draft, I would expect Funchess to be selected in more of the 3rd to 4th round range. Depending on what the Phins do with their early draft picks, Funchess may be a unique high upside value pick in the third or fourth round. What do the rest of the Miami Dolphins News enthusiasts think about drafting Funchess on day 3 of the draft?

From what the word is, any where’s from 4-27. Going to be interesting!

I can’t figure out why we have to use a first round pick on a receiver in a receiver rich draft. We can spend it on a star LB and it will do us a lot of good. There are some awesome LB’s that we should be taking advantage of and help our defense. If we had a couple of good LB’s last year we may have beat Det, GB and a couple of other close games instead of going down at the last minute.

Understand what you mean Tbone, but there are far more stud LBers that have been found in later rounds opposed to a true #1 WR. Miami has a good WR core, what they need to make it great/elite is a true #1 WR. And that WR very very rarely is found outside the first round or even the top 10/15 for that matter. I am for one of the top 3 WRs, after that everything is a bonus this year.

This is the type of player Philbin should like. Versatile and ability to create mismatches at both WR and TE AND H positions. He is a redzone target with his size vs smaller CB’s and can win vs man coverage vs S, nickle, or LB in redzone.

This pick makes too much sense for this regime to pick.

Miami will most probably draft 2 receivers and funches seems like a good second pick
It will be very interesting to see what they actually do on draft day
Funches could give us that double punch of 2 tight ends that are unstoppable

There were rumors the fins would trade down
There were also rumors that they would stay pat at 14
Then this week rumors that they might move up to 4 th position to get white
And today rumors they might take a defensive tackle with the 14 th pick

As to who we pick, the experts have been all over the board I think they have talked just about every position as #1 excecpt QB

I don’t think anyone knows what will happen for sure
But I still trust our 2 GM’s hickey and tennebaum (Tennebaum was a GM for many years with the jets, so even though his title says he’s not the GM he sure has had his input ) to get us the right players
We have to get a guard and a receiver that can start from day one as a minimum, now if we get 4 or 5 good starters (potential pro bowlers) from this draft then they will have done great.
    Go fins

That is what this time of NFL season is all about, deception, lies, fibs, exaggerations. D tackle rumor comes from Mel Kiper, predicting that the Fins draft a D tackle @ 14. However; the thought of Danny Shelton teamed up with Suh, holl cow-best d-line in football for several years.
Miami should take a D tackle, but it should be later, hopefully they can pick up Grady Jarrett later and use the 14th pick to pick up one of the top 3 WRs and/or more draft picks. Still say Miami is in a great position regardless.

Well I have to give the GM’s credit for creating a lot of mystery of who Miami will actually select, because it could really be anywhere from 15-25 different players as are possible first round pick
