Miami Dolphins News Update: Phins Leaning towards trading Jordan for Boykin

sports gambling

As we have stated numerous times before, this time of year is ripe with fresh rumors, some are just that, only rumors, other have some weight because in theory they make sense, and others are just too far fetched to believe. The latest rumor involves two of the most active teams in free agency, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Miami Dolphins. Apparently sources are saying that Miami is interested in trading for a member of the Eagles secondary.

One thing that gives this rumor an ounce of plausibility is that most sports gambling fans are aware that the Dolphins are actively looking to upgrade their secondary. However, when one looks at the Eagles secondary one sees a work in progress that is also in need of improvement, so it seems odd that Miami views a plethora of valuable players in the Eagles secondary that are worth trading for.

The Eagles just added Walter Thurmond and Bryon Maxwell in free-agency so it seems quite unlikely that the Dolphins would be willing to trade for any of these two players, since they had a fair chance to sign them in free-agency. The other quality player in the Eagles secondary is safety Malcom Jenkins, but Chip Kelly immediately came out and said Jenkins is not the player in question. Obviously Chip Kelly can say whatever he wants so that comment on Jenkins could just be smoke and mirrors. The player that makes the most sense would be Brandon Boykin.

Boykin has been in the league for 3 years and has predominately played as the Eagles nickel cornerback. He has a knack for getting his hands on the ball, having intercepted 7 passes in his career and whopping 6 in the 2013 season. However, Boykin and Kelly have not always been in agreement, because Boykin wants to play one of the main outside cornerback positions in order to get more playing time, whereas Kelly believes Boykin is too small at 5’10” to be able to handle going against bigger wide receivers on the outside. With that being said, Miami already has a mighty mite in Brent Grimes playing cornerback so they may be welcomed to adding another.

However, this rumor seems a bit too unrealistic because Hickey and the Dolphins have already traded away a 3rd round draft pick and they are now definitely in the market to add draft picks not give away draft picks. So it seems unrealistic for Miami to want to trade away anymore valuable draft picks for a player that is not even an every down stud. One possibility could be that Miami is thinking of unloading Dion Jordan for Boykin, who played for Chip Kelly at Oregon, and who Kelly was rumored to have been interested in trading for before. However, the more reasonable trade though would the Dolphins targeting former pro bowl Evan Mathis, who the Dolphins were also rumored to be interested in earlier in free-agency, and using Dion Jordan as a bargaining chip to complete the trade. Regardless of what happens or does not happen between these two teams, it appears that this is not going to be the last time that these two teams are mentioned together in a possible trade. I personally feel like the Dolphins are trending towards making the Jordan for Boykin trade but I think that a trade for Mathis would make more sense.

Frankly I would say that the Dolphins should put most of their focus on the upcoming draft and try to acquire more picks in the process by looking to trade back, and then if they still do not draft the players and the positions that they are most in need of, then they could look to trying to trade for players from other teams. But even in trying to trade for players from other teams, I would rather go after proven starting high quality players, not players that just appear to have upside. I am ok with drafting players with upside, but if your going to trade for a player that has been playing in the NFL for a couple of seasons, than that player needs to be an established stud. What does the rest of Miami Dolphins fans think about this latest trade rumor involving the Dolphins and Eagles?

Phins! needs to just play this guy at outside linebacker to cover the tightens etc. He seems to be a play maker I mean with his limited play he has been part of some big plays.

lastly should Dolphins moved him to outside line backer?

Coaching is about getting the best out of a player! How many players are shipped off and then performed better?

Yes I have been saying this repeatedly, Jordan can make plays, but he needs to play to be able to do it. We need an OLB and he can be that guy, he has the athletic ability

I agree the Dolphins should put most of their focus on the upcoming draft and try to acquire more picks in the process by looking to trade back.

It was stated that while free-agent pickup Brice McCain is a slot corner only, and not a particularly good one. Dolphins DC Kevin Coyle has primarily leaned on zone coverage, but probably because he hasn’t had a No. 2 cornerback effective enough to be consistently left in man. Because Brent Grimes is a stationary left corner, the Fins need a right cornerback capable of matching up with “X” receivers on isolation routes.

Dolphins should consider the Height and who will cover New England Tight end, can the secondary tackle New England and Rex Rayan running backs who will run the ball down Miami’s throat just like the Raven did last game they played?

I would like to see Jordon for Mathis plus a third round pick. Kelly likes Jordon he has a history with him. it will fill a definite need and it would be like getting two draft picks anyway. As far as filling needs with the draft- the only problem with that is coach doesn’t like starting rookies, so at least we would have a starter for the first game. Which is likely going to be Buf or the Jets. As far as Boykin I think we have enough short corners, if he went against Gronk the only thing he could do is bite him in the knee.

Yeah I would much rather have Mathis over Boykin, Mathis fills a much bigger need, but I don’t know if they would give up Mathis and a pick, that seems a bit of a stretch for a player like Jordan who is still unproven

  • Troy Lawrence

Ralph that is crazy. Jordan is more unproven than Boykin, but you think Jordan is worth Boykin and a second round pick. You have lost your damn mind!!!!

  • Ralph

Jordan so far has not lived up to expectations
There is nothing to lead us to think he will
    Plus he is Ireland’s mistake
I can see us trading him and filling our holes
But having said all that there is no way we trade him straight up for an unproven corner like Boyken
Now if we get Boyken plus a second round pick I think that this could be a possibility
The reason is we need still need 5 starters
In no particular order they are
    RB ; CB ; Receiver ; LB ; Guard ;
Only our first 2 picks are probably guaranteed starters (at least we would hope they are and we are not drafting potential anymore)
So we are short 3 other starters
You could say that the RB in the 4th round might be a starter also
Then we could luck out and pick up a receiver or guard in the 5th round that might turn out to be good enough to start immediately
    But that is a gamble
So that still leaves us 2 short
By trading Jordan for a second rounder plus Boyken or Mathis we fill 2 needs
So unless we plan to trade back in the first and again in the second rounds, a trade might be beneficial since Philbin is in a must win now mode or probably looses his job
Also we should not trade back until we are on the clock and see who might have fallen in our laps
Jimmy Johnson did that and we got burned
I don’t think we will do that again
What if a top 10 player slips to 14 we might want to take him vs trading down
So a trade is not out of the question

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Yes you should only trade back when your on the clock, like you said Ralph you never know who may fall to 14, but you need to be there to be able to decided to make a selection or trade back
