Just getting started: Who is next for the Dolphins?

[metaslider id=2706]

The Dolphins just made the biggest splash in free-agency by signing Suh to a record setting contract, however don’t expect the Dolphins to take the rest of the free-agency period off and sit on their hands. They still have more holes to fill on this roster, and even while the Dolphins were working out the contract details with Suh and his agent, they also offered Randall Cobb a deal that was reportedly worth more than the $40 million he signed with Green Bay. Apparently they offered Cobb more money, however it was a back loaded contract, so Cobb decided to take more money up front and stay with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. I love the aggressive approach in trying to get Cobb, and football gambling fans can not fault the Dolphins for making an strong effort on it. What this move also means is that Miami is not going to be afraid to spend more money in free-agency, even though they just spent a small fortune on Suh.

The Dolphins have already unloaded some expensive veteran contracts such as Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Cortland Finnegan, Nate Garner and Philip Wheeler. Next on the chopping block is going to be Dannell Ellerbe, Randy Starks, Jared Odrick (agreed with Jaguars), and Brandon Fields. Fields is an interesting case, because he was a Pro Bowl punter in 2013, however he will count $3.1 million against the cap in 2015, so Miami is strongly considering to move on from Fields and look to replace him with a cheaper veteran (Justin Tucker, Chris Jones, or Mat McBriar) or through the draft (Justin Manton, Mike Sadler, Kyle Loomis). Miami needs to be careful, because even though punter’s are not a glamorous position, they are still extremely important to the special teams unit, and a good one like Fields can be a deadly weapon in the field position game.

So with the Dolphins still looking to purge some expensive contracts on the roster, football gambling fans should not be surprised if Miami still has one more top tier free-agent signing up their sleeve. I like that they tried extremely hard to get Cobb, and they were wise to try to back load the contract, and I would expect them to try to pull a similar maneuver on another player. I would love for them to make a dark horse push for Darrelle Revis, however he has already been in the league 8 years and is looking for a contract that will pay him big money up front.

Here is a small list of top free-agents that are still available that Miami may strongly consider acquiring; Antrel Rolle (Safety), Rahim Moore (Safety), Julius Thomas (TE, Charles Clay may get a big offer from the Bills), Torrey Smith (WR), Bryan Bulaga (OT), Buster Skrine (CB), Patrick Robinson (CB), Jordan Cameron (TE), Brian Orakpo (OLB), Michael Crabtree (WR), Antonio Cromartie (CB), Da’Norris Searcy (Safety), Rolando McClain (ILB), or Brandon Spikes (ILB). Which player on this list do Miami Dolphins news fans think we will target and sign?

Brandon Fields is staying with the Phins! He restructured his contract to stay with the team.

We are lucky that Fields is a generous guy

I wonder if off the field stuff in South Florida helped him make the decision. On his downtime he is really into brewing craft beer and he’s teamed up with Funky Buddha Brewery to brew beer for/with them.

Maybe the good weather, brewing beer and familiarity with the Dolphins was worth restructuring his contract.

Have they released the details of his restructured deal? Hoping he took less but got more guaranteed money/years to compensate.

Seems our only hope at getting a good G via FA is now Clint Boling. Had wanted Franklin or Iupati but they are gone now. At FS, Rahim Moore is still a possiblity. Pickings getting very slim now.

Looks like Julius Thomas headed to Jags. Rolle would not be a good signing, he did not play well last year and is past his prime. He also is very outspoken and we all know how Philbin and Co. feel about outspoken players. Why not make a play for Revis? If there is cap space for Randall and Clay goes to Buffalo, is there enough money to try and get him?
