Mathis is on the Dolphins’ Radar

The Dolphins just recently found an available acorn, in C.J. Mosley that appears to be a perfect fit to add value to their team, and now there may be another acorn that the Dolphins may also want to scoop up before it’s too late. The Dolphins have numerous times been linked with possibly trading with the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire former Pro Bowl Guard Evan Mathis, and now the Dolphins may have been given an early Christmas present, because the Eagles have just announced that they have released Mathis.

The old saying is that patience is a virtue, and if the Dolphins are seriously interested in Mathis, which they should be, then there patience in waiting out the Eagles and not budging on making a trade could now possibly pay off in a big way. Mathis is now an available free agent who is now free to negotiate a contract with any team that he wants. Apparently the main reason that the Eagles released him was because of his contract. He was unhappy about his contract, because the team said they would raise his salary, but then pulled the offer before he could accept it. His 2015 contract was supposed to pay $6.5 million, now any team can offer him a brand new contract.

Now the multimillion dollar question is whether Miami can, and will, they make Mathis an offer that he would be willing to accept. Mathis is one of the better guards in the league, but his career is also becoming a bit long in the tooth, with him being 33 years old and a 9 year veteran. He clearly would not be a long term answer, but would definitely be a perfect stop gap for a season or two. The problem is that Mathis wants one more pay day before he rides off into the sun, and even though the Dolphins clearly have a glaring need for an experienced guard, do they have the financial power to close a deal?

I would do whatever it takes to get Mathis, because at the moment Guard is our most glaring need, and Mathis would be an immediate upgrade, and would be a huge addition to the team. He would immediately make our offensive line better, which would then subsequently make our running attack and passing attack better. I would even go as far as saying that if we signed Mathis, then he could be the final missing piece to help make us a playoff team. Sure we still have some other holes on the roster, but if we were able to fill our biggest area of need with a proven quality starter, then I believe this team will have everything it needs to be a playoff team. Even Super Bowl Championship teams, have a few weaknesses or dimples on their roster.

The Dolphins are not going to be the only team that will be interested in acquiring Mathis, but whoever really wants him better act fast. Other possible landing spots for Mathis could be the Giants, Seahawks, Broncos and Raiders. I would love to sign him, but most pay per head services sites like AcePerHead.com believe we will lose out to a team that is willing to pay Mathis more money upfront. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans think about our chances of landing Mathis?

  • Please !!!!! Salvage our terrible draft pick’s…. The people we drafted are in question, because we should have drafted a guard!!! and Our second pick is also in question, work ethic…Our number one the foot injury overlooked by our coaching staff was short of them making sure the foot was healed!! Try and get Mathis if possible.!?!!

Our draft picks are doing just fine. Parker will be fully healthy by the beginning of the season. Douglas is already pushing for the starting left guard position. Ajayi will be sharing carries with Miller. Phillips has been practicing well and will get his fair share of snaps. Lippett and McCain have been ball hawks in camp, and one of the undrafted LB will definitely make the team. I would say our draft picks are looking very good at the moment

He seems to be perfect fit for our team and our needs. I understand that there are financial considerations involved. I would think that this team would jump at the opportunity, but I would think that it would have been done by now. I felt more optimistic that he would end up on our roster through a trade then free agency. Now that Mathis has his choice where he goes, I am not so sure he ends up here. I hear the the Pats are interested, and I could see them going all out to land him. The Pats would be killing 2 birds w/one stone. Helping solidify one of their weaknesses, while also blocking Miamis attempt to solidify their weakness. That is how the Pats role, and both reasons are enough for the Pats to make this a priority.
Don’t think for a moment that the Patriots have not noticed that Miami will be their biggest challengers and adding Mathis would only get them that much closer.

Yeah I have heard Pats and Seahawks as a destination for Mathis, and both places he would have a better shot at winning a Super Bowl, so it may be hard to sign him, however we have $10.3 million available in cap space so we actually can throw some money at him if we really want to

Offer him a one year 8 mil contract. Overpay him for one year, seeing how salary cap issues don’t hit till next year, the aftermath of the ridiculously huge Suh contract.

    • Dunner

Don’t blame Suh for our salary cap numbers. How about Tannehill, Pouncey, how about Albert last year? Suh is a game changer and you will not be thinking about his salary cap influence when he’s treating Brady like a rag doll! Suh has a huge contract, he was going to get it somewhere, why not here?

      • massdolphan

I didn’t blame Suh for anything. Please reread my post. And doing something because someone else was going to is the wrong reason for doing anything in life. That’s like saying “Yeah, I married an ugly woman. Someone was going to, why not me?”
When Phin fans find out the Suh can’t play G, LB, and CB, they all be screaming about his cap hit come 2016.

        • Dunner

Mass, I read it a few times, not sure what your comment “the aftermath of the ridiculously huge Suh contract” meant then, indirectly saying we can’t sign anyone else because of said player/contract? My bad, I guess.
Suh makes a average LBer elite (ask DeAndre Levy), Suh makes an average CB extraordinary and any guard going against Suh on a daily basis has no choice but to improve. So when G, LB, and CB are much improved this year, you and the Phin fans better believe Suh had a positive influence on all 3 positions/players.

All this talk about how much money we spent is silly. The cap is there for a reason and every season it goes up and next year it will be going up as well. We have an owner that actually wants to spend his money and try to make our team better. Not only that but we still have $10.3 million left in cap space that we are allowed to use and we should use

  • Diego

Make him a 3 year, $13 million deal, with a $6 million signing bonus (which I believe hits the cap evenly throughout the 3 years), with base salaries of $2.5 million in 2015, $1.5 million in 2016, $3 million in 2017. A standard 3 year deal that is really a 2 year deal set to cut the player after the second year. Bye Earl Mitchell, we need your $4.5m. He could be the final piece to a legit team. Our O-line goes from dead last according to PFF to top 10 easy, automatically. Get it done Hickeybaum!

    • Jimmy Bourbon

We actually have the money to sign Mathis and keep Mitchell. Either way, we need to sign Mathis, he would be a difference maker on our line and team

    • M.J Curtis

We have the cash this year – its next year we are hurting. I heard like 160 mill which is way over the cap. I’m with Jimmy and want him as guard play killed us last year and with the current personnel they seem set for a repeat disaster.
