The Miami Dolphins are one of 13 teams that have expressed interest in signing future Hall of Fame kick-off/punt-returner Devin Hester. With that many teams in the mix, it is Hester’s decision to make, and it appears to be happening sooner then later, with Hester tweeting “Man this free-agent is starting to heat up all I can do is ask God to help me make the right decision.” The Dolphins do have two things working in their favor; his family lives in Florida, and he went to school at the University of Miami.

The main question is does a 31 year old Hester still have something left in the tank, that can be deemed as an upgrade over current return man Marcus Thigpen? Just by the name comparison alone Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would say Hester is worth the risk. Taking a closer look at last years numbers also points to Hester as being worth the gamble. Last year Hester’s kick-off average was 27.6 which ranked him 6th, and his return average on punts was 14.2. (There was no ranking for him on punts since his number of punt returns was below the amount required to be placed on the rankings. A main reason for this is because teams are still terrified of him and prefer to kick it out of bounds.) Now compare these numbers to Marcus Thigpen who had a kick-off average of 22.5, and punt-return average of 7.8. Hester also had one return for a touchdown, compared to 0 for Thigpen.

Looking at the numbers makes it obvious why Miami is interested in Hester’s services. However, there will be a stiff competition for Hester and Miami hasn’t proven itself as one of the most desirable teams in the NFL to play for. Secondly and most importantly this is going to come down to Money. The Dolphins and Dennis Hickey have stated many times that they are looking for value this off-season, so the question is what do the Dolphins value a 31 year old return man that is nearing the end of his career? Also Thigpen is only scheduled to make $570,000 in the 2014 season, which comes into play when they assess the value of this position. Even if the Dolphins do not end up signing Hester, I think that they need to bring in some competition for Thigpen, because we need more production from that position next season.
