Have The Dolphins Pulled A Patriot’s Move?

The New England Patriots have made a career of signing former AFC East players. The Pats have then either made more of them then the player’s previous team could ever dream of, or they have picked their brain and used that knowledge against their former team to an advantage. And to add insult to injury they have on occasion done both simultaneously.

After signing former Jet Quinton Coples who was just released this Monday, the Dolphins MAY have taken a page from the Patriots book. Since the Dolphins will be playing the Jets this Sunday, at the very least Coples will be like having a spy in their locker room. Sure, Coples does not know the Jets entire game plan for this upcoming game, but he does have some priceless knowledge on what the Jets do, and what they are looking to do. Regardless of what Coples does on the field this upcoming Sunday, the coaching staff will be able to pick his brain for a few helpful tips to attack and defend the Jets.

In regards to Coples expectations as a player, it is fair to say that most sportsbook gambling fans and Pay Per Head Bookie sites like AcePerHead.com are not expecting much from the former first round pick. However, Coples was converted to a linebacker with the Jets, but Miami will be moving him back to defensive end, a position he played in college. It is possible that this small change can turn Coples into a more productive player in the NFL.

In addition, Miami was already a little thin at defensive end after losing Cameron Wake, and you can never have enough pass rushers, so not only do they get a player from the rival Jets, but they get a player that plays a position of need for the team. Also, even though Coples has not played up to his lofty expectations as the 16th overall pick in 2012, he still has notched 16.5 sacks in 56 career games, which comes to 1 sack every 3.5 games. Also when you look further into his stats the 9 games that he played in this year he barely even got on the field in those games, which is the reason why he has no sacks this year. Last season he had 6.5 sacks, which shows there is some talent there.

The one risk of signing Coples is he due a fifth year contract option of $7.8 million and it’s guaranteed in the case of injury. I highly doubt that Miami will resign Coples no matter how he plays the rest of the season, however, for the off chance that he does get injured seriously during the remainder of the season, the Dolphins would be on the hook for that contract option. What does the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans think about this latest player acquisition?

I think we needed to give this guy a shot. I disagree, the team may sign him next year and restructure the deal. The team will lose Wake, and most likely Vernon. Vernon’s contract is up and he will be a FA and will be looking for significant money. Need someone with his capabilities to fill those shoes.

Yeh not sure Vernon has played well enough for a big contract – I like him but not big contract like him.

Shelby is doing a good job. Couples probably won’t be activated for the Jets game. Though $7.8 isn’t a big number for a good player, couples might decide he is injured if all does not go well. He has no trade value. Everyone says that he is a natural TED in a 3-4. I hope everyone is right.

Yeah, and I doubt we would ever go 3-4…dont think it would work for Suh or Vernon if we resign him – though Phillips played NT and might excel there on early downs. Of course they run 3-4 on the Texans.

  • I think its a good move we need some pass rush he is still young good be a steal and he know info about jets.BILL BELACHEAT signs a player from dolphins offense and defense they tell him all signals and tom brady has it on his wrist band and the defense also knows all dolphins plays another way for him to cheat. When u play belacheat u need to do the same or u wont have a chance that is why new england is so good.
