Future Rests On Chris Grier’s Decisions

The near invisible man Chris Grier will call the shots
The near-invisible man Chris Grier will call the shots.

The former head of college scouting, Grier IS the GM, not Tannenbaum

A popular opinion among Fin Fans is that Mike Tannenbaum is the GM and Chris Grier is just a figurehead. By all appearances, this notion isn’t the case. Unless there is some Machiavellian conspiracy, Grier is the man in charge, and he will make the final decision over who Miami picks in this draft.

This isn’t to say he doesn’t consult and consider others, but the buck stops at his doorstep. So today’s draft will be made or broken based on his choices.

Grier will need to do better than last year.

I don’t know about you, but given his impact on my beloved team, I haven’t really considered him all that much. In my mind, Tannenbaum and Gase were the main players determining the Dolphins fortunes, but truth is, this power structure is a trifecta… and today is Grier’s moment in the sun–or our moment in hell.

The evaluation of Chris Grier’s first draft is still up in the air

After doing some research, some interesting things stood out:

As per ESPN, “Grier comes from a scouting family: Scouting is in Chris Grier’s blood. His father, Bobby, is the director of pro scouting with the Houston Texans. Bobby also worked with coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots during their first Super Bowl run. Also, Chris Grier’s brother, Michael, is a hockey scout with the Chicago Blackhawks. He is a former player for the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks. Both Bobby and Michael got championship rings in New England and Chicago, respectively, leaving Chris Grier as the only one among the trio without a title. “[Michael] got a ring last year when they won, so I was pissed,” he said. “I’m hoping to get one down here soon.”

We hope so too.

Now, just because he comes from good scouting lineage doesn’t mean the apple can’t fall far from the tree, because it can. But it doesn’t hurt to have good roots either. On an interesting note, Bobby Grier is now a consultant for the Phins and working under his son.

Really, the only solid evidence we have to predict today’s outcome is the 2016 draft. The hallmark of that draft was luck, luck that Laremy Tunsil fell to number 13. If it wasn’t for that freak fall of talent, the rest of the draft would be considered unspectacular… at least as far as 2016 is concerned. It’s not to say Howard, Carro, Drake, and Grant won’t take a step forward and change to the image of the draft. They very well might. But let’s be realistic, it didn’t take an NFL football genius to make the Tunsil pick with the best pay per head reviews.

So, here we are in 2017. This a crucial moment in this franchise history. Could they screw up the draft and still make something out of this regime? Yes. But it would be a lot harder to turn this ship around.

What Grier does with his fifth-round picks will be crucial

Grier needs to find 4-5 contributors in this draft and post-draft Free Agency. Of those players at 2-3 need to be starters. If he pulls off this kind of draft, he would net a B+ to A+ draft. and the Dolphins would be in prime position to make noise this year.

On a more sober vein, I think a B draft grade with 2 starters and 1 contributor would be the absolute bare minimum for success this year–and that might be stretching hope a bit too much. Miami would be very thin with a B grade, and the lack of depth would come back to haunt them. Anything less than a B would put a great deal of pressure on Miami’s chances of success in for this season… and maybe beyond.

Without exceptional ammunition and position, Grier must maximize every pick. He must find instant contributors and depth as well. Honestly, getting a B+ or better grade in 2017 is a tall order, but it’s an order that must be made.

Last year, Tunsil started, and Howard started half the year. Drake and Grants made high-impact contributions, but overall it was limited, and Carroo added a drop or two. Given the expectations this year, the higher level of competition, and many holes, this type of draft would fall short.

But if Grier does pull off a great grade, and you add a fine deal maker in Tannenbaum, and an excellent Head Coach in Gase, Miami Dolphins will be poised for greatness. Today is a big day Fin Fans. Get your popcorn ready. Go Fins!!!

  • Round 1 picked 22nd Charles Harris DE from Missouri to Dolphins a talented edge rusher and he was projected on many draft board to go about the picked 15th but the Dolphins got him at 22nd pick. My grade A

I like the kid, a few concerns, most of which are around of his tweener nature and lack of ability to handle the run.

      • Hello Admin

I went over some games and I noticed that DE Charles Harris in this game against the Cavalier’s was “Whipped by Left Tackle Yodny Cajuste”.
Yes Admin I would agree this is where the Coaching has to play in his development.
Left tackle Yodny Cajuste # 55 started six times at the position before suffering an injury midway through the season.

…they passed on both Foster and Lamb …there will be a LOT of hindsight and recriminations if Harris doesn’t deliver on his promise

…but those two aside, I like the pick …he can start at both DE and OLB …my guess is that he will be our starting OLB and be groomed at DE to eventually replace Wake …he has the talent to be a long career, repeat pro-bowl caliber player at either but if his QB rush holds up at this level, DE will be his eventual spot, likely sooner than later …I see him as a “two-fer” …filling an immediate need at LB and a long term need at DE …plus his motor and his character are reportedly both strong pluses …Grade A so far

…I take the team hype that he was “the one” they wanted all along as pure bs …that’s nothing but pr flak and to be expected …but he could well have been the bpa left on their board …certainly hope so

…now onto the 2nd …dare we hope that Lamb is still there? …will the huge run on DBs in the 1st motivate them to grab one now? …lot of good DTs and LBs left? …or are they really in bpa mode?

          …tune in at 7pm …no open cursing allowed 🙂

haha… now I agree with passing on Foster. I just didn’t like the combo of off the field issues and injury concerns. Screaming like a madman and having a diluted pee test to add with an injured shoulder could turn into a mess, and we just dumped Dion, so I get it. I don’t know who this lamb guy is :), but the Lamp miss was sort of a bummer, but not too much because I understand the direction and rationale. If they flop at taking care of the inside of the Ol, then I’ll hindsight the FO to the ends of the earth. I pretty much agree though on Harris, except I think he might go from DE to SLB. His coverage skills and hands were a huge asset in his Pro Day and I doubt it will go unused. They could run Zone blitzes more and maybe he’ll play a Jack role. This new DC might actually end up having a creative bone… never know. I have been digging into him before I write up an article, so I’ll expand there. I like how the Phins used smoke signals and appeared not too interested. It fooled me. Not sure about leaving a trade back on the table. But, I really like this kid IF he develops. I think he could be special. He has the tools and character. This will be a BIG fork in the road for the PHins… can’t wait for the rest of the draft.

Harris is raw with one year in his school and only 2 starting in college, with one year in a system that was suited to him. He needs to be more cerebral, better technique and exp. and a bit more strength. Overall he could very well be an excellent pick, IF he grows. He is growing on me, but for this year, him being a situational player stresses the rest of the draft. They need at least 2-3 starters and 2-3 contributors. He will be a contributor, but now they must find at least 2 starters somewhere else. These next two picks will have a lot more pressure on them now.

This is the day! Certain the Dolphins will get the Best player. Please don’t reach, trade back is okay.

The key is the players past history performance on the football field and not football NFL combine results.

Please don’t minus the 2018 draft picks.

Reminder who can cover the Pats Kronk?

Once again don’t draft the players you like but the players who can raised the bar of performance. We have enough projects.

Some how I’m feeling our success will be in the later rounds. Hope the Best for the Dolphins.

Those 5th round picks are the ace in the hole… not saying they will get you a hall of famer, but they should you something… they’d better.

      • Dunner3131

        5th rounders used in trades???

        • admin

Depth, starters, or a good third that falls to the fourth. With three fifths that is a strong hand in that round… Ajayi to Brady has come out of that round. Not saying you need to get that quality. But you need to get at least 1-2 contributors.

  • Fritz

In an ideal situation, Derek Barnett would fall to the Dolphins, but I don’t see that happening, so here’s to the Dolphins selecting the BPA and to that player having a HUGE impact this year.

    • admin

Hey Fritz, who is your top 3, Barnett not included…

I’m no expert, but I like Davis, Lamp, or a trade back… I kinda want a sure fire player and consistency. Other seem to have some big ? marks… Maybe Fins trade up for Barnett if he is close… I wouldn’t put that past Tannenbaum.

      • Fritz

        1. Lamp, 2a. TJ Watt 2b. Jarrad Davis and 3. Zach Cunningham. These players should be still there at 22. I rate guys like Rueben Foster, Charles Harris and Hassan Reddick higher but they will be gone by 22.

    • admin

I really need to watch a lot of tape to put my foot in the ground, but Davis or Foster… that’s who I think they will chose, with McDowell as third. I would be hesitant to get all of them but Davis.

  • Dunner

I feel better about Grier than I did about Hickey, Ireland, Mueller, Ireland, Spielman, Ireland. Did I say Ireland????

    – Finally here, have a feeling that Miami is going to trade out of the first round all together.
    – Maybe Tannebaum can work his magic and we will be talking about Sherman at this time tomorrow.
    – Speaking of magic, I hope Lemmus is brewing up his magic potion from last years draft or at least saved some!
    – So hoping for Reddick or Foster tonight, if not trade out and get another second and third rounder(s). Now I know that has Lemmus brewing his potion for sure.

I live in upstate NY (Bills country), meeting a few buddies at our local pub for the first round. Wings and beer, it doesn’t get any better than that. Get to listen to the Bills fans complain about whomever it is they pick at 10. Get to listen to the 1 Jet fan,
; oh wait, Jet fans don’t care this season (rebuild). And most appreciative, I don’t have to listen to any Patriot fans, any Patriot chatter for the entire first round – YEA, YEA, YEA. Unless of course they pull off a Garopolo trade or any other trade to get themselves back into the first, probably going to happen knowing Billacheat.

It is finally here, and it is nice that we are adding potential to a already good roster, a already good team, a playoff team 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • admin

Hey, I was a New Yorker till two years ago. Long Island! Almost moved upstate. Hickey made some nice picks though…but he did drop the ball a lot too. Grier has the chance to blow him out of the water, but hickey does have Ajayi and Landry on his resume. I won’t get home till 7 or so… so I’ll get to fast forward through and be close to the pick… can’t wait.

      • Dunner

I agree, I could have lived w/Hickey, but Ireland was an absolute embarrassment, and think he was Miami’s representation for the Hard Knocks??? Ouch

    • admin

Miami seems to have lucked out again.

      • admin

I’ll take harris… didn’t see him on the private interviews, so I didn’t think he was their guy… what do you think? Fills a big need. Maybe he’ll be a SLB?

        • Fritz

I honestly thought Harris would have been gone before 22. He’s a solid pick at the spot the Phins took him. I’m a bit surprised that Lamp is still on the board.

          • admin

A few good players fell. I would have preferred Davis, because he was an instant starter. But, Harris has zero injury history and is at a bit more of a premium position as he can play DE and/ or SLB. I think interior OL are falling in value. This could put Feeney at the Dolphins next pick.
