Observations From First Day Of Dolphins Camp

Dolphins training camp Day #1 is now in the books.

The first day of the Dolphins training camp is now in the books.

The first day of the Dolphins training camp was chock full of news.

The Miami Dolphins had their first day of training camp this morning – let the cheering start!

It was exciting to have the team back to work.

But, on the downside, there were a few players that were put on the PUP list: Arian Foster (more of an over cautious approach), Xavien Howard, Bobby McCain, Damien Williams, and Zach Vigil.

Willaims reportedly drew the ire of Gase because he was the only player who reported out of shape. This could end up being the final straw on his career in Miami – very disappointing.

Cornerback was already an extremely weak and thin position, and now with McCain and Howard unable to start training camp it will be even more concerning. Most of the best pay per head in the world are betting that Miami are inching closer to signing a veteran Cornerback.

The first thing that immediately stuck out in the news was that Tunsil was working at Left Tackle with the second unit, and Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner were working as the Guards on the first team unit. Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that Tunsil would be one of the starting Guards. I understand that the coaching staff didn’t want to just hand Tunsil the starting job, and that this is very, very early. But, since Tunsil is not a natural Guard, shouldn’t he be practicing at Guard as much as possible in order to get him ready to play? This will be something to watch very closely because I will be a bit bummed if Tunsil is not one of the starting Guards by the start of the season- unless of course Dallas somehow has an epic awakening.

Big news came from the first day of camp: the return of Dion Jordan

The  big news was that Dolphins will also finally have Dion Jordan back on the field, but on a conditional basis of him undergoing counseling and a reevaluation before the start of the season. Jordan is allowed to participate in training camp and other team activities, but he needs to pass his evaluation in order to get fully reinstated and active for the regular season. Anything Jordan can bring to the team should be seen as a bonus considering he has barely done anything in his first three years in the league, and nobody has counted on him to be a big part of the Defense this year. If Jordan can actually get fully reinstated and contributes, that will be a success right there.

During Practice one player that appeared to stand out in particular was Rookie Jakeem Grant. He had a touchdown catch from Matt Moore and made some other nice plays. He is a unique player with a skill set unlike any other player on the team. The big question is, will he continue to have this kind of success when the pads come on and the thumping starts? If he can continue to have a strong camp, Coach Gase will be happily forced to design some specific packages for him on offense.

What were the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about the first day of training camp?

…major bummer …makes me want to puke just thinking about Thomas as a starting guard …wonder if I can buy an injury insurance pkg on Tannehill?

…on the other hand I said after the draft that Tunsil was a tackle, not a guard and it would be a mistake to play him out of position …he’s too damn tall to play guard well imnsho …but then I don’t get paid the big bucks to make those decisions

…hope one of the others steps up …the problem has been that Thomas always shows well in camp but then becomes a turnstile in the games

…it is good news that Jordan is in camp …now what position are they going to play him at and is he going to finally deliver the goods or become a total bust

Insurance package…nice!!! 🙂 I still think Thomas can be useful as a RG. We’ll see, until pads come on this is all just glorified drills…it’s still fun though!
