Why the Dolphins had to Drop Hartline

Most pay per head fans have already heard that the Dolphins have released Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson, however, I am very surprised by many people’s reactions. Scouring the internet blogs, a lot of Phins fans seem very displeased about the release of Brian Hartline, almost to the point that they are shocked that this happened.

If you have been reading our blog, this would not have come as a surprise since we have been saying that this was pretty much a guarantee to happen. At the end of the day, the NFL is a business and in strictly a business sense this makes tons of sense. Hartline was going to count over $3 million against next year’s salary cap, and for a player that was a third or even sometimes the fourth option in this offense, and who had only 39 receptions, 474 yards and 2 touchdowns, $3 million is not worth the production.

Don’t Get Me Wrong

Hartline did a great job for us in 2012 and 2013 having back to back 1,000-yard seasons and was Tannehill’s go-to guy, but last year he was an afterthought in the Dolphins offense, and Tannehill and the offense in statistical terms had a career year. Getting rid of Hartline is not really going to have an impact on next year’s offense. Yes, he may go to another team and have a very good year, however, the reality is that in Bill Lazor’s spread the ball around the field offense,  does not fit as Hartline well. Not only that, Hartline always had issues scoring touchdowns. We need receivers that can get into the end-zone, and in Hartline’s 6 years with the team, his highest amount of touchdowns in a season was only 4. He had a total of 12 touchdowns in 6 years, which is an average of 2 touchdowns a year. Playoff teams are not paying their receivers over $3 million a year to score 2 touchdowns a year. Hartline was a good teammate and even better guy, but this is the NFL and this is a business, and Hartline’s time on the team is now expectantly over. He served his purpose in previous years, and the Dolphins wisely decided to move on. There are plenty of free-agent wide receivers that are going to be available that are better than Hartline, and this upcoming draft is loaded with wide receiver talent that can easily become a cheaper and better option than Hartline. This was 100% the right move. What does the rest of Phins fans think?

Its too bad Philbin isnt judged with the same “its business” attitude as the players, otherwise he’d been gone this year.

Fins have just signaled to the entire league they will take a WR early in the draft.

First off this is about Brian Hartline the player, and NOT Brian Hartline the person. We and any organization would love to have a roster full Hartlines, but Hartline is not an excellent receiver, he has had a few decent seasons, and that is what Hartline the player is right now, a decent player. Decent players do not have a salary that Hartline had. I really like the move from a football standpoint. Sure it was not a enjoyable move, never the less, the right move.
Cutting/releasing Wallace will be an enjoyable move as a Dolphin Fan.
In Wallaces case addition by subtraction!

I agree with Cervantes Wallace has to go,
    bad attitude,
failure to be on the same page with our QB,
Does not fight for the ball,
    too expensive,
    Always someone else’s fault …..
what good is it that he is a deep threat, if he doesn’t connect with the QB.
Our QB is not a long ball passer, he is more of a west coast offense guy. So Wallace is not really used as a deep threat. 10 Million a year is way too much for what he brings to the team. Trade him for a good Offensive Lineman that can be a starting guard for us.

Yes Wallace just does not fit with our offense, we don’t need to spend that kind of money on a player that is disgruntled and does not fit Tannehill’s skill set

  • Take the loss on WALLACE!! Quitter ,not a team player, selfish, Not as good as he thinks or for that matter what the people who paid him the money to begin with!! Their fault cut them from the payroll.

  • Dan Cervantes

Big mistake, plenty of other ways to cut $$$$$ Hotline was not one of them.
Excellent receivers are very hard to come by!!! Buffalo will pick him up so we will be haunted by him two times a year. Sorry to see him released.

    • Jimmy Bourbon

I would not call him excellent. He does not have a nose for scoring touchdowns, and is not great at getting yards after the catch. There are plenty of receivers in free-agency that are better then him, and plenty of receivers in the draft that will be better then him

I really liked Hartline because he was a chain mover. He didn’t score a lot because I don’t think he had a lot of YAK’s. Tannehill had a lot of trouble with his timing for those few years so he wasn’t hitting him on the run a lot, so Hartline would go sit in the flat and catch the ball. I will miss him I think he had heart . If you watch Brady you would see him hit his receivers on the run all the time, and many times they were RB’s so when they got the ball in their hands they were capable of fighting through the middle for their first downs. How many “star” receivers are we going to go through to figure this problem out. We pay big bucks for the fastest guy out there and then can’t connect. I think our OC should try to utilize the talent we have and mold our offense accordingly. Just thinking out loud.

Nobody has good #stuff when they don’t get the ball. He’s an excellent receiver. Another fins blunder. If you need someone to go, it’s the coach. Looks like a dead person on the sideline. His motivation rating is 0. Another 8-8 season. Ownership just doesn’t get it. Getting sick of being a fins fan.

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Excellent receivers do not average 2 touchdowns a year for 6 years and he was never good at getting yards after the catch. Don’t get me wrong I like Hartline but in no way feel this is a bad move. Plenty of other better receivers out there

  • Barry

Brian is an excellent receiver. Nobody will show you #s if they’re not thrown the ball. Philbin is horrible. No winning coach is emotionless. He looks like a dead person on the sideline. Another boring 8-8 dolphins next year. Fins fans are sick of this. I know I am.

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Excellent receivers do not average 2 touchdowns a year for 6 years and he was never good at getting yards after the catch. Plus we averaged more points this year then any other of Hartline’s six seasons with the team, so even though he barely contributed this year, it shows that we did not need him to contribute

    • Dunner

Hartline could not create separation in the 2015 season. That is not what most excellent receivers lack.

      • Jimmy Bourbon

Yes agreed. I think we will find a replacement for Hartline in the draft and everyone will quickly forget about Hartline. Hartline was an over achiever.

  • Mark

I totally agree. In a business decision this is all true. I believe that we finally have the right personnel in our front office dead set on winning. I am eager to see just how aggressive they will be. We as fans have been waiting quite some time to be ELITE. I believe in Tannehill and Philbin. I believe in Ross. I don’t think Ross likes to be second tier to anything or anyone. I did not feel like this at all last year. I do believe Joe Philbin needs some clock mangt. refresher courses but think he will still be good for us.
I liked the read being called the PURGE. We’ve desperately needed it and not another rebuild year. I liked our draftpicks last year more then ever before and can’t wait to see how Mclain, Tripp, Jenkins
    and Billy Turner turn into.
