Disappointing All Around

The Phins lost their first game of the season to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and now the Dolphins are 1-1. With their first home game looming next week against the Bills, they must marinate their preparation with the loss of a very winnable game. Once again they came out flat. Once again they were their own worst enemies. And what stings is they didn’t have the lead for even a second against the Jaguars.

To me the biggest thing was penalties. Miami had a whopping 13 penalties for 112 yards, and that is not something that is going to put you in good position to win football games. Under Coach Philbin the Dolphins have generally had a very clean sheet in regards to penalties, so hopefully this was only an anomaly. Vernon’s penalty at the end of the game was the nail in the coffin on that final drive for the Jaguars. Philbin must regain control of his team this week in practice, or this is going to be a very long season.

Surprisingly, there were no turnovers in this game from either team. I guess they were too busy committing penalties. (There was a combined 21 penalties for over 205 yards) Miami did a little better job protecting Tannehill, only giving up 2 sacks. But Tannehill spent most of the game running for his life. On the other side of the ball, Miami couldn’t get any sacks on Bortles, and once again the defensive line was out played by the offensive line opponent. Suh was held in check one-on-one most of the game. The fact he didn’t command a double team is disturbing.

Once again, Miami failed to generate any semblance of a running game. They only attempted 16 rushing plays, which accumulated to a dismal 42 yards and 2.6 yards per carry average. Clearly this offensive does not want to make any effort to run the ball. Until they realize that you need to have a balanced offense in order to be successful on offense, you can bet Miami is going to have similar problems sustaining drives and putting points on the board.

There is still plenty of season left, but Miami needs to start playing better football if they want to be in the playoff hunt late in the season. Hopefully this game will serve as a wake up call, because next up is the Buffalo Bills, and all Football gambling fans know that Buffalo is a very touch match up for Miami.

    Jimmy,
Here are some references as to why I have given up on this coaching staff in particular Coyle. Take a few minutes and read this article provided by Bleacher Report (Dolphins are being held back by Joe Philbin- poor coaching); http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2571526-miami-dolphins-are-being-held-back-by-joe-philbin-poor-coaching

    Coyle is not the answer:
” Coyle could ease the pressure on his cornerbacks by showing greater creativity and diversity in his play-calling. He is not like Rex Ryan or Bob Sutton in the sense that he understands how to confuse quarterbacks by alignment or what he does after the snap ” Bleacher Report, 2015.

I Like Lazor’s philosophy, but his play calling needs refinement:
” So far this season, the Dolphins have run the ball with a running back on just 12 of their 51 first down plays, not including one kneel-down at the end of Week 1. That number means they are passing the ball more than 75 percent of the time on first down. During the first game of the year, they opened with 15 straight first downs that didn’t feature a handoff. Not until there was roughly one minute left in the third quarter did they hand the ball off on a first down, when they did so on consecutive snaps for gains of 12 and 17 yards. After gaining 29 yards on two handoffs, the Dolphins running backs didn’t touch the ball again for the remainder of the series ” Bleacher Report, 2015.

I understand it only the second game of the season and maybe some should slow down, but when the same issues/staff are costing this team wins or a chance of winning it is time for Mr. Ross to considering plan B. Its obviously not to late to right the ship this season and I hope I’m wrong, but it is dangerously close to blowing up as well due to the staff.

Go Fins, beat Buffalo and take a vacation the following week over the pond and head into the bye week 3-1!!!!!! 🙂

I agree with you on Coyle, I was disappointed that the team kept him another season. I did not care for him when we hired him and have been disappointed by him more and more each season.

Lazor I like a lot, but I do agree he relys to heavily on the pass and needs to mix it up more. I would also like him to run more hurry up and a more faster up temp offense.

That was a very interesting read Dunner. What stood out the most was that Miller, based on the numbers, has been very good between the tackles, and Miami needs to start taking advantage of this. In addition Coyle’s usage of his cornerbacks is not effective, and Coyle himself has not proved to be an effective Defensive coordinator

    Looking at different area:
I missed having Brandon Fields out there Sunday. I haven’t seen enough of a sample size from Darr yet but Fields was always dependable in pinning the other side.

  • Chris

I read in the Miami Herald today that Suh ignored defensive plays that were called in. By doing so it confused the players around him. Why does he only have 2 tackles after 2 games?
I’m so tired of being let down by this team. They get ya all hyped up prior to a new season only to slap ya in the face when the season starts. I feel real bad for all the people who bought into all the hype of a new stadium. Now you will be seated in 95 degree heat in your plush seats to watch your team loose game after game. I guess not winning in the pre season was the clue to where this team was headed.
Has anyone noticed that our run game didn’t do much in the past few years in the first half of games. They had to wait for their opponents defence to be run down in the second half before they can move the ball? I just sure hope they can find themselves sometime soon…

  • phinfreak

AMAZING!!! Phinfreak wrote warning about all this prior to the season. Now everybody jumps on the bandwagon.

What happened to “playoffs!” hahahahhaa homers.

This team will go nowhere so long as Philbin et al are in the building. Doh!

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Go find a new team finfck. I am so sick of your bs. Its like your cheering for them to be bad. Go find another blog, stop bringing all this negativity here.

      • phinfreak

Yo Yimmy….careful bra….losing seems to have become an acceptable standard around here.

As for moi….Im freaking pissed that every year this team sucks.

But hey, thats just me. Enjoy your .500 Fins again this year.

  • Dunner

Thats just it…… They have the talent (Defense: Wake/Suh/Grimes/Jones; all pro players). Ross needs to start looking at staff. I hate to say, I would even hate more to have to go through it agin, but there was no excuse for yesterdays performance. How many times are we going to see the same 40 D without any pressure or creative fronts/blitzes. Can you imagine what Brady is going to do to this D if Bortles could have his way??? Philbin AGAIN cost this team another win. Take the 10 second run off and save the time out; A) we probably get a field goal out of it (end 1st half) B) Jacksonville doesn’t have enough time to even get into field goal position, let alone kick one going into the half. Philbin just does the worst job managing the clock at end of halves/games and it has cost this team wins before and has cost this team another win in only our second game of the season. I so hope I’m wrong about the staff. I have zero, yes zero confidence in this staff moving forward. Even if they come out and play well and win vs Buffalo, this staff is going to cost another game/shot a division/playoffs.
When I say staff, I mean Philbin and ESPECIALLY Coyle. Mr. Ross please ride ourselves of this guy. Coyle inherited a good D and has done NOTHING that shows improvement since his arrival. We may not have the most talented defense in the league, but I assure you a lot of teams would like to start off with Suh/Wake/Grimes/Jones. Give those 4 to Billacheat and he could put 7 of us Phins participants w/them and win. Sorry, I’m not one to call for someones job, but COYLE MUST GO!!!
Here’s to another .500 season. I live in Upstate NY and have 2 trips planned for the Giants and Colts and I really have no desire to waste my time/money to watch this lame duck coaching staff lead (if you want to call it that) to another .500 season and miss the playoffs by 1 game, yes 1 game; that is how important that loss was to in state rival Jaguars.
    Hope I’m wrong!!!!!

  • We need to take out our running back!!!! No need to say the name… What happened to N.Mareno is he available?? What about the running back we just got? I am sorry, but we have NO RUNNING GAME!! What ever happened to the blitz??? Our coaching staff better wake up!! And SOOnnnn.
They better play Buffalo like a playoff game. They have the talent,!?….9 use it!!!! Great game Tannehill…

  • Stephen Fabrizio

Hickey and Tannenbaum can add all the talent they want. Until we get a new coaching staff this team is not going anywhere! We never properly addressed the OL/OG situation and now it will continue to bite this team. Needed to sign Mathis or another quality OG. Now Mathis is with Denver and they are 2-0. T-Hill is not the problem, but his OL is! Dallas Thomas is a BUST! Douglas as a rookie is playing better. Hickey and Tannenbaum might need to really consider a trade! I said all along that this team has some excellent talent now, however, we don’t have the coaching to take advantage. Bottom line is that Philbin & Coyle need to go, and I am not all that impressed with Lazor and his play calling. He doesn’t move T-Hill around nearly enough, and the offensive pace is still too slow. Where is the hurry up offense to put pressure on the defenses? Looking like another 8-8 no playoffs season. Supposed to have the 4th or 5th easiest schedule in the league. Pats, Bills, and Jets will be nightmares. Jimmy, what are your thoughts?

  • tbone188

If you think they looked like sht– wait til next week

  • Ralph

    I taped the game
Went back and looked at the crucial mistakes
First half dallas Thomas let the opposing player through and tannehill was lucky he didn’t get sacked had to throw it away twice
Then second half Thomas man again got through and sacked tannehill
Overall very poor play by the left guard led to hurries sack and no lanes open for running game
Philbin wanted to save 4 million so told front office not to sign mathis
Now we are paying the price
    Defense played poorly too
Mc Cain not ready for prime time defensive line still weak it was too soft
We are in for a disappointing season again
We keep this up we will be very lucky to win 5 games
    Front line overall grade F
    Defensive line D-
    Corner play D-
And this is the 5th worst team in the NFL
    Parker a non factor
    Stills a non factor
    Jennings a no factor
    Tannehill long ball non existent
And I was hoping to make the playoffs
I just hope we aren’t the pushovers in the NFL
Forget beating Buffalo or Jets or Patriots
    We are in trouble
Have to wait till next year when we get a real Coach not an administrator afraid to have tough players who speak their mind

    • Stephen Fabrizio

Ralph, I agree. We can add all the talent in the world, until Philbin & Coyle are gone, you are looking at maybe an 8-8 season, no playoffs. D-Line, extremely disappointing! Dallas Thomas is a BUST! Douglas the rookie is playing better! Hickey & Tannenbaum may very well need to consider a trade to upgrade the OL/OG position. Could very well be another long season. I just hope that this team can come out mad as hell vs. Bills. This is an early but must win game if we can to right this ship and have a shot at the playoffs.

      • rick

In the great words of Jim Mora….PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS?!?! How can we even be so stupid to use that word after watching those BUMS play. Nothing more than BUMS! They should be ashamed of themselves…. from top to bottom in that organization.

      • Dunner

Playoffs???? Thats not happening. Not under this Staff. I really thought this may be the year we could dethrone the Pats, not happening, wild card; why? This staff can’t manage a lousy regular season game a few hours from home, how would they be able to handle a playoff game that is 10x more intense than a lousy regular season game vs a non playoff opponent. Answer = they won’t be able to. So disappointed and have written off this staff regardless. Really sucks
Mr. Ross, you are a smart business man, well, you invested LOTS of $ in this defense and I know you wouldn’t have a president/ceo as incompetent (not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully) as COYLE running any of your other business ventures. You must act accordingly!!!

        • Jimmy Bourbon

It is one game slow down every one. Did you guys think we were going to go 16-0?

          • Dunner

I understand it is one game Jimmy. Just seems like both games were identical. There were no adjustments made from game 1 to game 2. No adjustments throughout the JVille game either. 16-0, no, but a week 2 win @ JVille, Yes!!! And if not, not because of the same issues that showed in Wash. I’m sorry but I have given up on Coyle. I’m not one to react from 1 lose, however; Philbin has cost us games in the previous 2 years because of his clock management (or lack there of), and in happened again in game 2 of the ’15 season. Coyle has done nothing (improvement) with this defense since his arrival, and there are no excuses this season with the players available to him.
Sorry Jimmy, I don’t see it any other way.

          • Jimmy Bourbon

I agree with you on Coyle, he should have been gone after last season. It is rare to see a defensive coach fired during the season, but I think that would be a smart idea. This defense has more talent than when Mike Nolan was the defensive coordinator and Nolan had Miami playing better defense
