Decline Of Wake Greatly Exaggerated

When Cameron Wake exploded out of his 2015 slump this week, I thought about Dan Marino’s last season in 99′. I can’t remember the exact game, but what I clearly remember is him playing poorly, and after throwing a pick, I screamed in a burst of frustration, “Bench the bum”! No one in the bar noticed as most weren’t Phin fans. But I was struck by a deep wave of self-loathing. I felt profane and treacherous. I watched Dan hobble off to the sideline. He was frustrated, Jimmy was frustrated. I remember feeling worse when the usual “Marino Fire”, blaming everybody, rallying the troops, and already getting ready for the next offensive drive wasn’t there. There was a noble resignation on him as he walked silently past Jimmy. I felt worse. The name of Judas should have been engraved on my forehead.

Years later, a revelation was brought to my attention in an article about his last season with Jimmy (YES, before NFL Network you had to get all the good info in magazines). The article talked about the rift between QB and coach and told how Jimmy had stripped away Marino’s ability to call audibles, and that one of the greatest QB’s was forced to stare at the defense impotent and run his play regardless of what he saw. With his “exit treatment” by Miami and the “Wanstache” debacle in full bloom, that moment of betraying my childhood idol and a beloved member of my personal Hall Of Fame at the bar years earlier, hurt even worse  – I had sent him off to the slaughterhouse without the full scoop.

Cameron Wake suffered something very similar this season. Yes, he is at a totally different stage in his career – Dan had greatly deteriorated (but how great was that Seattle play-off game). But, what is similar is that one of Miami’s all time greats was getting his heels greased to be rushed out of town. Many talked about last season when he “faded” at the end? I remember the double and triple teams he faced as O-lines all but dared DT to beat them one-on-one. This season the question was asked, ‘what happened to Wake, and where is his production’? The pulled hammy flew under the radar. Suh sucked. Wake sucked. Blow up the DL line. What a waste of money. Now, considering my Marino’s fiasco, I’m not judging any fan. Heck, I was wondering what what up – only because of having the experience of battling a pulled hammy of my own and having to try an play through it myself was I able to reserve final judgement on Wake. This game I felt he would be healed and would tell the true story in my mind.

But, let’s forget all that and let’s focus on Cameron Wake’s and his contribution to the Miami Dolphins clearly. What a great story he has been for us and has beat all but the best pay per head reviews with his stardom…better than Zach or Taylor, he came to us not in the late rounds, but from the Canadian football – CANADIAN FOOTBALL!!! Wake is clearly one of the best, if not THE best, athletic talents ever to grace the Miami annals. Added to this all his awesome celebrations, his work ethic, his production, his character, and his leadership. Did you see how the camera panned to Wake after a sack and the defense huddled around him, blocking the shot? They knew what was being said. They knew how much “the talk” hurt this prideful man and how unjust it was and how much he wanted to break the chains of the misperception. For me, those “special players” that play for Miami are family. And I can say regretfully, I have even turned on the head of that family, so I have zero bragging rights. Wake has earned the right to be in the family of Miami fans – earned it in spades. He is as special and as rare a talent and person as you can find in the NFL. When his time for ire comes again, and it will let’s remember that.

Cameron Wake will one day leave the Miami Dolphins, whether it’s free agency, trade, injury, or degrading of his skills into retirement. Until then, let’s count our blessings that he is with us now. Let’s enjoy a once in a generation talent, the best pure pass rusher we have ever had, and a player that just might end up in the Miami Dolphins Hall Of Fame – if not the NFL Hall Of Fame itself!  GO FINS!!!

How many times is Wake being double teamed now with Suh in the middle?
This is what has changed along with his health. Teams need to double Suh which gets Wake sacks.

What is really needed is the same performance from other DT and DE, that would make things very unpleasant for Tom Brady.

His first step, when not hamstrung with a bad hammy, is one of the best I have ever seen. Near Taylor, and Thomas explosion off the line.
