Dante Peaking

As the draft gets closer there are plenty of players that rise up the draft board like a shooting star, and others that drop like a lead weight.

One player that has been rising up the draft boards is Dante Fowler Jr, the Outside Linebacker / Defensive End from Florida who has climbed all the way up to the top of his position. Some pay per head fans believes he could be a surprise pick for the Dolphins at the number 14th spot.

Fowler is a big boy at 6’3”, 261 pounds, ran the 40 in 4.61 seconds, and recorded one of the fastest times in the first 10 yards of any front seven defenders at 1.59 seconds, which displays his explosiveness. In 2014 he racked up 60 tackles, with 15 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 pass defended. Fowler has a diverse skill set, and not only is he fast and athletic, but he is tough and has been noted as having very desirable leadership qualities. He is a perfect locker room guy, who would immediately be able to start as the Weak Side Linebacker.

Fowler also makes sense because he is tough and physical, which are two characteristics that this organization has made a point of adding to their roster this off-season. You can never have enough tough, hard-nosed football players, and Fowler would definitely add one more name to that list. He is a well-rounded linebacker who is stout against the run and is explosive at getting to the QB and is aggressive in pass coverage.

I would not mind if we selected Fowler in the first round because he would be an immediate game one starter at a position of need. In addition, I am excited about his intangibles of his leadership skills and his overall toughness as a football player. Those traits can not be taught, and if you can find a player that has them, then that player is already ahead of the learning curve. Hey Jimmy, glad to have you back. I agree that he is probably not making out it past the Redskins at 5, worst case scenario for him he slides all the way to Atlanta at 8, but most analysts consider him the top edge rusher in the class, especially with the reported injury to Shane Ray’s toe and the DUI arrest on Gregory. Even if he was there, I am not sure I would even take him simply because he wouldn’t get on the field much this year like our much maligned 2013 first round pick. I do have to admit that I am just sick about all the reports on Dion Jordan’s no-show at voluntary camp, and the prospect of him getting shipped off, possibly to replace our 3rd round pick. I can’t say I would blame the FO if they made this move, cause he has certainly seemed to have brought this all down on himself, but man, what a disappointment. I can just see him being the latest post-Dolphins success story. If this is the move then we gotta go edge rusher by the third round at the latest because we need to feel real good about whose coming behind Cameron Wake’s last few years, and cutting ties with Jordan leaves only Shelby and Fede, which have shown promise but can that often overlooked promise develop into Pro Bowl caliber? We know it can by the model of who they will be replacing, but his case is extremely rare. I would immediately consider DE a need if we do ship him off before training camp.

The main reason I would like to see a guy like Fowler is what everyone here is saying it would elevate our defense greatly. With the offenses of the Jets and Bills we would do much better than without him. I would love to see Wake–Suh–Fowler!!! we wouldn’t have to produce THAT many points then.

The question is if Fowler is available at number 14 would we take him. In my opinion yes we could it would solve future problems next year with our 2 defensive ends and fowler as a linebacker that would create quite a rush also he is an excellent tackler and excellent at stuffing the run that would make us one of the top defenses in the NFL
The team would not be gambling with fowler as the first pick

Having said that it is not as great a need for this team at this time as a receiver or corner or middle linebacker therefore I believe that extra points are given to those positions in the draft board over outside LB . corner and receiver are the two deepest positions in this draft and we can get a quality corner or receiver in the second round.
Although reading the quotes from Tannenbaum and Hickey I think that we are going to trade pick number 14 to a team desperate for a RB specially if Gurley is available.

We will move back to 20 or mid 20s and pick up an additional second or third rounder
This makes absolutely more sense than taking Fowler or Gurley at 14 even though these two players would be definite impact players we need three starters out of this draft so we need to regain a top 100 pick

The most likely scenario is if they find that Parker is not there at 14 that we will trade back and pick up an additional draft pick

Additionally I believe that Jordan will be traded and whether it’s straight up for a draft pick or coupled with a fifth rounder so that we can pick up a second or third rounder I don’t know but Jordan will be traded regardless of cap
Hickey has already proven that he is a good talent evaluator and will pick a great player that will start immediately for the dolphins in the first round, And the odds are that the experts are going to be proven wrong again just like they were last draft

I just can’t see the Phins taking Gurley if he’s there at 14. I think the team is happy with Miller as starter but will look to add a power RB later on in the draft. His injury history also scares me as besides the ACL, he missed 3 games in 2013 with injuries. Durability is an ability just like 40 times, YPC, etc. and in that area he’s a concern.

This is the dumbest article I have read about this draft so far. He won’t make it past the jets at Six and probably before that. Not to mention he would be a defensive end in a 4-3 because he is a pass rusher. We need someone in the middle not outside anyway and there isn’t one worth taking before the second round. I’m starting to think either Parker or Gurley will be there and they will take one. If not then they trade back to get the extra pick they want

Travis, I agree that Fowler will not make it to 14, he will not make it past 5 (Redskins). I couldn’t imagine Miami taking a RB (Gurley) at 14. The closer we get, starting to warm up to the possibility. I would like a true #1 WR (Parker, Perriman) at 14. Could imagine a scenario where they do take Gurley there at 14 and Green-Beckham slides to Miami in the second round. Draft day dream!!! LOL

  • Dunner

He will not be there at 14. There is no way they take Fowler Jr. over Parker if both were available. A true #1 WR is exactly what this team needs. Fowler Jr. would be a great addition to our defense and would only improve the defense, almost certain he will not be there at 14, there could be 5 edge rushers taken before 14, and Fowler Jr. is one of top edge rushers.

I can only say I have all the faith in the world in Mr. Hickey. I think he did great last year and expect nothing less this year. Having said that I believe this talent would be with us for a long time and keep this defense on top for a number of years. I hope management sees it this way. it would be soooo much better than a wide receiver. This pick (Fowler) to me would not only be best available but fill a large need for our defense. (if he’s there at 14)

Tbone, I agree w/Hickey. He is building a nice roster in only one year, and he has trimmed all of Ireland’s over paid players. I believe that Miami will be very active during the draft, teaming Hickey (whom is not afraid to maneuver picks) along w/Tannebaum (whom is known to be very aggressive during the draft) there should be a lot of movement, or at least several attempts. Going to a interesting day 1 and 2 of the draft.
