Dan Campbell Interim Coach, BUT Then What?

cmpell

The Dolphins have officially fired Philbin and promoted Dan Campbell to the interim Head Coach position.

If Campbell can miraculously change the Dolphins fortunes, and lead this team to a winning season, then he would probably earn himself the heading coaching position for next season, however that may be a tall task even if he was the reincarnate of Vince Lombardi. However, most of the best pay per head reviews in the world are betting that Miami will be hiring a new head coach after this season ends.

All eyes will be on Campbell these last 12 games of the season, and it will be very interesting to see if he can inspire this team to start playing good sound football. I really hope he can, however, the fact is he is a rookie head coach now, and any rookie head coach is going to go through a bumpy learning curve.

If Campbell can’t turn this team around, then in all likelihood the organization is going to look outside to hire a new head coach for 2016. I just saw a list of potential head coach choices, that ranged from former head coaches, coordinators, to college head coaches with no NFL head coaching experience, and sadly to say it is not extremely impressive. Below is the list of possible coaches at the moment.

Jim Schwartz currently a free agent

Raheem Morris currently the assistant head coach of Atlanta Falcons

Todd Haley currently offensive coordinator of Pittsburgh Steelers

Josh McDaniels currently offensive coordinator of New England Patriots

Hue Jackson currently offensive coordinator or Cincinnati Bengals

Kyle Shanahan currently the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons

Adam Gase currently offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears

Pep Hamilton currently offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts

Gus Malzahn currently head coach of Auburn

Brian Kelly currently head coach of Notre Dame

Kevin Sumlin currently head coach of Texas A&M

Right off the bat, I would say I am not a fan of bringing in a college coach unless his name was Jim Harbaugh, however, Brian Kelly has been successful every where he has been. (Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and now Notre Dame) It is a different ball game when dealing with grown men that are making a lot of money, compared to college kids, who are playing for the love of the game, so it is often a rough transition for coaches to make it in the NFL.

Of the three coaches that are coordinator with No head coaching experience, the only one I would be semi-interested in is Kyle Shanahan of the Falcons. His offense was very good in Washington when he was the coordinator there, it was serviceable in Cleveland, which is actually a compliment because Cleveland has been terrible for this entire century, and his current offense in Atlanta is the third-best scoring offense in the entire league. He has the pedigree, and probably would be one of the better options out there.

In regards to the list of choices of coaches who do have heading coaching experience, I would say Josh McDaniels would be the top of the list. H is learning and being taught by the master, Bill Belichick, and considering we have to play New England two times every season, he would be a good inside guy to have in our organization.

    Jimmy!

    1. Why cant we run a fullback?
    2. Are you saying that our current offensive line cannot pass block or run block? How can we open up running lane for our R/Backs?

  • Dunner

We just may have our future head coach in place right now! Who is to say different??? I am having a hard time understanding why everyone has written this season off already???

There is 12 games left to the season, 12 games!!!! Sure we just fired our head coach, and in majority of those cases the team is starting over and a rebuild is following. NOT here, I am sure if you looked at every team that fired their coach during the season, sure their roster did not have the talent this roster has. If Philbin was so incompetent then why can’t Coach Campbell come in and at least improve this team??? HE CAN!!!

Oct. 18th is like opening day all over again for the Fins and I. Why can’t rest of you Miami Fans treat it that way as well??? Another opening day for us, who could ask for more??? Look at our schedule from here on out, yes the NFL did Miami a huge disservice w/so many road games in the first 9 games, however; The Eagles are not what people thought they were going to be, The Cowboys may be without Romo still, the Colts look mediocre at best. The season is not over, there is going to come a day in the NFL where a team hires a new coach during the season and has a resounding response and makes the playoffs, why can’t it be Miami, why can’t it be now???

I refuse to believe that this team is going to lay down. And, if they do not respond to Coach Campbell and continue to play lifeless games, then it may be time to tear this team apart and start over again.

Everyone was calling for a change, well we got it. Now it is time to rally and support this staff (-Defensive Coordinator), this team. The season is far from over. It starts Oct.18 vs the Titans. 1 game at a time, get back to .500 and then start to look ahead because their original goals could still be within reach.

I like the hire, Coach Campbell please find us a more aggressive/creative Defensive coordinator, I still feel we have the talent. Time to walk the walk…….

I agree Dunner if we can win the next two games then we are back in it. Titans and Texans are winnable games, and 3-3 in an AFC that has lots of poor records already puts us back in the race. there is still plenty of football left

      • Dunner

Jimmy, I feel as though you and I are the only ones that are thinking that way. I am just about as excited for the 18th as I was for opening day. Especially now w/a new D coordinator (Lou Anarumo). What is this team going to look like, what are they going to play like?

I’m sure everyone is going to bash the move considering Anarumo has minimal experience as a D coordinator. But, everyone has started at the bottom at some point.

I feel like Miami has an edge the first week or two, due to the fact that the Titans will have minimal tape to rely on. They too can not be certain what Miami will look like on the 18th. What will the offense do, what will the defense be doing?

Come on Fins fans, I understand that the situation is oh so frustrating. But, it is what it is, lets get behind Campbell and company and expect what we were expecting going into week 1. I would almost assure you this team is going to have a different approach on both sides of the ball.

        Is it Oct.18th yet???

Jimmy I did not See Coach Campbell name on your list.

Can the Dolphins recruit David Shaw? What could he bring to the Dolphins? 2016

We have about 11 more games this season? Who will coach!
    No run game; No defense
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
We should placed our order for Coach Shaw 2016 season.

In the beginning of the article I briefly mention that if Dan Campbell can’t turn things around then the Dolphins will be looking at that list of coaches. If he can turn things around than he will have a good shot at being the head coach next year. Shaw is a decent choice, but again its a college coach and they seem to have the tougher transition coming to the pros

      • Steve

        Thanks Jimmy!

1st This Dolphins Team has the Coach and players to go far this season!
Campbell maybe the right Coach for the Dolphins!. You mentioned once that it is easier for the offensive line to block better when running the ball and more difficult to pass block?

  • Steve

Okay! We had this conversation during free agency and the draft so what happen? The Dolphins purchased what they wanted and now are begging for what they need!

First We have Campbell (let him coach, lets set see what he brings to the table. Enough with these advisers. Its about the coach and his team.

A good run game will sustained the dolphins to get into the play off. If the Defense cannot hold thing down they all should be replaced end of seasoned.

Let Campbell Coach let it be!

From what I hear Chuck Pagano from Indy is not happy and does not get along with Irsay. Rumor has it that he may leave after this season. His players like him and they play hard. I say the team needs to make a few trades if possible. Trade Jennings for some veteran OG/RG now. Teams like KC and Dallas have needs at WR but have good O-Lines. Is there a CB not with a team now that can be brought in to compete? Sad to say that when Ross decided to keep Philbin last December, the ship was sunk! You could kiss 2015 good bye!

Yeah Ralph, it would take some amazing acts for this team to meet it’s preseason expectations. BUT, there is aleast hope now, however faint. Honestly, Campbell might benefit from some luck…injuries played a major factor in both lines failing. Wake has been seriously injured since early on in game one. A one legged Wake is near useless- if he heals big upgrade. Albert also is another that might heal over these two weeks and would be a big deal for his return. To me it’s the RG spot that need upgrade…Jamil is too weak and needs to be replaced. Cb #2 has been pathetic thus far maybe Jamar and Grimes Might end up a better pair. Last MLB kills use on run downs an that needs dramatic help. there are several other holes but either through a miracle of coaching or FO, if they are fixed and added to players who want to play, we could see a competitive team this season. Anything more would def. be on the side of long shot- but I’m praying!!! Go FINS!!!

    • Jimmy Bourbon

I agree if the Dolphins can heal this next week and a half that in itself could help greatly

  • Ralph

I like Shanahan but if Campbell is able to get a new defensive coach and wether we end up with a wining record or loosing record is not important
    This season is lost anyway
What we need to see is a change in attitude and performance
    Most of all performance
So if we loose a few games but we are close and we perform well then that is a sign that Campbell is doing a good job
You need your players to play with heart
It is obvious that this is not the case right now
But we don’t have the right personnel to have a winning record
We have too many holes to fill
    We need 3 offensive linemen
    We need 2 good linebackers
We need a safety and a corner maybe 2 corners
And lastly we could use a good fullback to get us 2 yards and to block
An over rated player we should consider trading is our center he doesn’t seem to open any holes for the running back ever trade him while he is still worth something and get a bruising quality center that will push the defensive tackle out of the way
So what we really need is for Tanebaum to resign and let Hickey take over
We did so much better with Hickey getting starting caliber players than with Tannebaum
Plus Tannebaum gave us Suh who I hope we trade soon he is not worth the money we are paying him also trade Jennings we don’t need him with our other stud receivers
I’m glad Philbin is gone – incredibly enough he wanted to trade Mathews because he couldn’t get along with him or control him
I like the fact that Campbell is respected by the players I hope he proves he deserves the job permanently

    • Jimmy Bourbon

Yeah I like the way Campbell sounds and will be very interested to see what happens these next 12 games. If he can turn it around then he will have a great shot of being the head coach next year
