Cover This Cox

Last season on defense Miami actually did a very good job defending the pass, however, once they got hit with the injury bug their lack of depth became exposed.

Bookmaker Software fans already know that Brent Grimes is one of the premier cornerbacks in the entire league, but on the other side of the field, Miami is going to have to find some help this off-season.

Finnegan played well when he was healthy, however, he is contemplating retirement, he has had injury issues the past few years, and his contract is going to be way to expensive. The two “rookies” from 2013, Davis and Taylor, have yet to show much bite and will be going into their third season, which means time is running out on their potential to be a productive player on this team. I will say that at least Taylor has shown some flashes, but he suffered a season-ending injury that derailed his season. This all means that Miami is going to have to find some help at the cornerback position outside of the organization.

One possible free agent that Miami should consider is Perrish Cox from the San Francisco 49ers. Cox has been in the league 4 years now, and last season it finally clicked for him. He played 15 out of 16 games and had 53 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 18 passes defended. Obviously, the interceptions and passes defended are the main things that jump out at any BOOKIE SOFTWARE fan. These stats are very similar to pro bowler Brent Grime’s 57 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 13 passes defended. Now that the NFL is a full-blown passing league, teams can not have enough good cornerbacks. Adding a player of Cox’s caliber would automatically fill the void opposite of Grimes, and upgrade the Dolphins secondary.

Since free-agency comes before the draft it will be important for Miami to fill a few of their needs before they get to the draft. If they can do this on a position like cornerback, then this is a double positive because it fills a need, and it allows Miami to use their draft picks on other positions of need. Cox is definitely one of those players that will fill a need at a reasonable price so that Miami has money to spare on other players.

What does the rest of Phins fans think about making a push for Cox?

I agree with both comments above. We need help at CB and Cox would fit the bill at a decent price. However, the biggest needs via FA will be the NT/DT position, and the OG. Much more of a physical presence is needed these positions. Suh, would be the best NT available by far, but Dan Williams, Terrence Knighton, BJ Raji, also would be good fits. Team also needs at least one pro-bowl caliber OG. The rest will have to come via the draft. I say at #14, draft the best MLB available. Draft a “bell-cow” physical RB to compliment Lamar Miller. I disagree about the LB’s as a whole. Misi is good outside and that is were he belongs. Jelani Jenkins has been a gem of a find. Chris McCain last year showed good promise as a rookie. Johnathan Freeney is coming along nicely. We really just need a “stud” at MLB. I say do whatever it takes to sign Suh if at all possible. Then grab Tom Tupati RG at SF. The guy is a very solid guard, who also happens to be a “road’grader” when it comes to run-blocking. If we can’t get Suh, then Dan Williams would be the next best choice. Both Suh and Williams consistently need 2 people to block them, and Suh also had 8.5 QB Sacks! 8.5 for NT!!!! The Dolphins have some real talent at the perimeter positions, and excellent team speed, however, the lack of a dominating interior line is what is holding this team back, not to mention that “power” RB.

I agree as well!! Living in Seattle, I have been able to see Cox play quite often and I have thought that he’d be an excellent fit for our defense opposite Grimes. Hickey will hopefully heed our words and get this done the day FA opens.

agree 100% we need to pick up someone like Cox who can be gotten relatively speaking at a reasonable or maybe cheap price but who has shown that he has the potential to be our starter the whole way opposite Grimes.
Is there any other CB’s hitting free agency under similar situation ??
We also need to pick up at least one LB in free agency. We need 2 or maybe even 3 so we can probably get a decent one in the draft and I foresee getting one with either our first or second pick. but lets also get one in free agency and let the best ones play.
We also need OL and DT and RB help so we will have to pick up free agents since we cannot get that many good impact players in the draft.
We definitely need to cut some players and Wheeler and Ellerby are the first 2 that need to go. But not until their cap hit is the least amount so if we have to keep one or both till June so be it. We are here to help the Dolphins not to give any given player a better chance to get on with another team.

Yes there are a few other CB’s such as Walter Thurmond and Byron Maxwell. Yes we need to stock up on LB, and try to fill as many holes as we can during free-agency so we can focus on getting the best available players when it is our turn on the clock during the draft.
