Counting on Youth

The Dolphins made a lot of moves this off-season, and one thing that went under the radar in regards to their player transactions was that they made it a point to get younger.

They got rid of aging veterans like Randy Starks, Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Cortland Finnegan, and Daryn Colledge. At the moment the Dolphins have the 5th youngest team in the league with an average age of 24.8 years old. (1 Jacksonville Jaguars (24.5), 2 St. Louis Rams (24.5), Green Bay Packers (24.6) and Houston Texans (24.8))

Having a young team is like a double edge sword because the youth can provide a higher potential ceiling, but youth also means a lack of experience. Also, younger players usually have more of a chip on their shoulder to prove themselves, but sometimes their over-aggressive playing style can lead to mistakes during key times in the game.

If this team can find a way to make the playoffs this season, then most of the boys at the pay per head services site, AcePerHead.com will agree that Philbin and the rest of his coaching staff will be back in 2016. Continuity is key for long term success and that will lead to less player and personal turnover, which means this team can continue to grow together.

Just look at the Offense, with Tannehill, Stills, Landry, Parker, Miller, Ajayi, James, Pouncey, and Sims, who are all young and have the chance to build something special together and for years to come. The Defense also has young studs in Suh, Vernon, Jones, Jenkins, and McCain, who provide a solid foundation that will have the chance to play together for many years.

Not only do the Dolphins finally have play-makers on their team, that opposing teams have to game plan around each week, but these players are also young and are just scratching the surface of their potential. The key though is that they have to grow up fast and win this season, because if they do not end this season with a winning record or a playoff berth, then a new coach will most likely be hired, and another rebuilding process will be underway. The biggest thing these young players need to learn and learn fast is to close out close games and close out the season in November and December. Does the rest of Miami Dolphins news gurus think youth will be a liability or an advantage this upcoming season?

The onus is on the coaching staff? Young players or not, rookie/young player mistakes are going to happen, but they are not the reason for December collapses. This staff needs to figure out a way to be playing their best football in December. What is it that this staff needs to do different once the month of December rolls around. And, YES, there needs to be a change in their approach, their practices, both. Somewhere, somehow it is not working, the collapse in December has been an ongoing thing for the past three years. So there is something to it, and if this team collapses again in December, as much as I hate to say it, there will need to be a change, a new staff that will make the necessary adjustments to finish in December and roll into the playoffs with momentum.

There have been rumbles that practices have been too demanding late in the season, which have left players gased for the final games of the season. The coaching staff needs to figure out a better way to keep their players fresh for the final month of the season.

Jimmy, That is so so true. If we can make the playoffs with a healthy and FRESH SUh/Wake/Vernon/Grimes/Jones on defense. We would have a chance to beat anyone anywhere.
