Another Genius Contract

It looks like Dawn Aponte and the Miami Dolphins have done it again by striking a very advantageous and formidable contract with their now official franchise Quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The deal is worth $95 million over 6 years, with $25 million fully guaranteed, and $45 million in total guarantees (however those extra $20 million in guarantees will only be paid as long as Tannehill is on the roster, so there is a small escape clause for Miami if Tannehill regresses.) This contract is lower than Kaepernicks, and Flacco’s, and the same as Dalton’s, however, Tannehill will receive more guaranteed money than both Dalton and Kaepernick.

As long as Tannehill can continue to improve, then most pay per head reviews would say that Miami got a decent bargain, because he does have the skills, and now has the supporting cast on offense to be better than all the above three QB’s. He checks almost every box you are looking for in your franchise QB, and these guys are not growing on trees as evident from the fact that our last true franchise QB was Dan Marino in 1999. For starters, he is an extremely hard worker and is tough as nails, probably one of the toughest QBs in the entire league. He has improved every season in each of the main statistical categories, which also shows that he is coach-able. For all the talk about his accuracy issues, he had multiple games where he threw double-digit completions in a row without having an incompletion and does a very good job of spreading the ball around. Lastly, he has fared well playing against Top QB’s in the league; he has some quality wins on his resume against Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Ben Roethlisberger, and Philip Rivers.

He does have some things that he still needs to improve on starting with his deep ball. However, Lazor has adjusted the playbook more towards Tannehill’s strengths of the short to medium range passing game, which has helped him to improve his game. So even though Tannehill still has a lot of work to do on his long ball game, it is not something that is an all-out deal breaker. Tannehill has improved with his pocket presence, however, he still has more room to improve in that area as well. The other big thing is that he needs to be a bit more of a vocal leader. I know he leads by example in regards to his work ethic, but he needs to take the next step and be a more vocal leader. Hopefully, with the removal of players such as Wallace, this will give Tannehill more of a chance to make this his team.

I am a little worried that Tannehill will fall into the trap like a lot of other athletes, that as soon as they get their big payday, their production declines. Again I would like to think, and I do hope that his work ethic qualities will not be affected by finally earning the big contract. The contract definitely shows that the organization believes in Tannehill, and like Ron Canniff, the host of UnSquish the fish pointed out in his latest podcast (Click on this link to check it out the latest podcast where I was the main guest: Unsquish the fish), this organization feels they could have the next Joe Flacco situation and they wanted to buy low now, rather than having to pay more after Tannehill leads the team deep into the playoffs. Clearly, what Tannehill can do in the playoffs is yet to be seen, since he has never had a good enough record to lead the team to the playoffs, but the organization believes, and I believe as well that he has what it takes to bring this team to the promised land.

Does the rest of the Miami Dolphins news gurus believe Tannehill can finally get us to the playoffs, and make it past the first round?
