Will 2016 Dolphins Be Alpha Male or Beta Male?

The is a stark difference between Alpha Male and Beta Male.

During the NFL draft, there was a common theme that General Manager Chris Grier kept reiterating after most of the Dolphins selections, “We believe this guy is an Alpha Male”.

An Alpha Male has certain unmistakable characteristics: leader, comfortable with ones self, domineering, aggressive, not easily upset or intimidated, a pack-builder that sets the pace. Examples of Dolphin Alpha’s: Don Shula, Dan Marino, Zach Thomas, Larry Czonka, Bryan Cox, Jason Taylor, Cameron Wake, and Jarvis Landry…among many others who have worn orange and aqua.

A Beta Male is Joe Philbin.

A team can not be built with all Alpha Males because then there could be an in-house power struggle. However, a team needs some alpha males on the roster in order to lead the team and must certainly have THE Alpha Male as it’s head coach.

Without beating a dead horse, when Joe Philbin was at the helm, he wanted to eliminate all the Alpha Males from his team and replace them with a bunch of “yes-men”. Clearly, that did not work very well, and the result was that it left the Dolphins lacking in leadership from the players side.

Now that the Dolphins have hired Adam Gase, he himself has already established himself as an Alpha Male. He is not afraid to surround himself with other Alpha Males. This is a much needed culture change for an organization that has been stuck in a rut for the last 20 years.

Most fans are betting that the Dolphins will look like a new team under Adam Gase. However, immediate positive results are not what they are wagering on. One of the best sportsbooks in the world. Acesportsbook.com just released their regular season win total odds, and the Dolphins over/under win total is 7.

Even with an Alpha Male as H.C. , it will take time to turn it around.

Once again, there isn’t much faith in the Dolphins. I believe the beta stench of the Philbin era still lingers in the minds of many.

With any rookie coach, there is a period of adjustment to change the scheme and culture of the team. Turning the Dolphins around into a perennial playoff contender will not be something instant. But, the change will be unmistakable early, even in its infancy – if it’s for real and not more hype.

I am excited about the different approach this organization is taking about being more conscience of how they value players, spend money, and bring in leaders and hard nosed players. There is a change taking place, and I am excited to see what that is going to translate into when they step on the field. Go Fins!!!

    Admin!

    Long as the Dolphins win their games?
    Offensive line is fixed!
    The Defense is questionable?
    Special Teams Fixed!
    QB and the Back Field is Questionable?
    (If we see 90% passing with a spread offense then nothing has changed)
    (If we see A well balance Offensive and Defensive Team we are on our way to succeed?)

    Game Plan for the Miami Dolphins 2016
    A well Balance Team
    A team with minimum mistakes
    A team that over come adversity

      Steve, believe the Miami will be balanced. Look at the Bears under Gase play calling in 2015:

      6th = rushing attempts
      11th = total rushing yards
      20th = yds per attempt
      12th = rushing TDs

      Even though the Bears were 20th in yards per attempt, it still didn’t stop them from rushing the ball. As a matter of fact, they were 6th in the league in attempts. I believe we will see that philosophy here in Miami under Gase. 🙂 🙂

    There is a change taking place and was never more evident than in free agency followed by the draft. There was/is a plan in place and they have stuck to the plan. Seems like a responsible organization that gets “it”. We have been the Off-Season Champions for the last 5 years+, all for not!

    The new staff and this organization may have been rewarded already, a little bit of luck for a change; Tunsil falling into our laps (thanks to the master plan by Lemmus), may just be the break needed. Oh yea, don’t forget Brady’s suspension is back on and very well could be out for the first of 2 games w the Pats, another nice break.

    Gase knows how to win in this league, and I feel that Gase himself, believes he can win regardless of personalities/history, etc. I am excited to see a “New” team go to Seattle (of all places) and compete. Even more than that, see them go to New England in week 2. Sure Billicheat will try and show Gase who is the teacher and who is the student. Not so sure Gase feels the same, “new kid on the block” may just be Billacheat’s kryptonite.

    …sigh …I usually like your writing but you’ve got to do something about your editing …hint …before you post, print it out, turn it upside down, then re-read it …it forces you to go word by word, punctuation by punctuation …be amazed what you’ll find

    …on the post topic, couldn’t agree more …no more nice guy HCs …Philbin was a great example of the Peter Principle …he’d reached his potential as an OC under a very Alpha HC who actually made the play calls …he was way over his head as an HC here …wish him the best in his new role but thank god he’s gone from the fins

    …whatever Gase turns out to be, it certainly won’t be a Philbin clone …and that’s a good thing 🙂
